My dog has frequent watery diarrhea and vomiting. Should I see a vet?

If he does not have anymore episodes of vomiting or diarrhea and is feeling better, I would keep an eye on him until the morning and then take him in. If he is lethargic right now, I would get him seen now because he is likely dehydrated and needs fluids administered under the skin for hydration. He may also have eaten something that caused all of this, have an infection or have an intestinal obstruction. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Hi and thanks for your post. Liquid bowel movements (diarrhea) can have many causes: intestinal parasites, bacterial infection, viral infection, or a food allergy. You may try giving her plain canned pumpkin (no the pie filling) in her food to see if that helps firm up her stool in a day or two, but if not, Ellie will need to see her veterinarian for a fecal test to check for parasites and a fecal culture to check for bacteria. If she is not up to date on vaccines, parvovirus is also a possibility. Lastly, if all else as been ruled out, a food allergy may be suspected. I am very sorry to hear that Emma is experiencing these problems, I am sure it is very unsettling for you both. Unfortunately, with a history of vomiting and diarrhoea, and an inability to keep food down for 2 days, I advise you take Emma in to see her vet. There are a number of potentially very serious causes of such clinical signs, including pancreatistis and ingestion of a toxin or poison. Your vet will be able to perform a physical exam and run diagnostic tests such as bloodwork to determine the cause of Emma's vomiting and diarrhoea. In the meantime you can continue the boiled chicken breast and white rice diet and provide plenty of fresh water. I hope that answer was helpful and more importantly that Emma feels better soon. Yes, any pet that has persistent signs especially vomiting and diarrhea should be evaluated immediately. Once dehydration and electrolyte imbalance develop, they will just continue to get weaker and weaker unless treated. Reasons for vomiting/diarrhea are many and range from intestinal problems or problems with other organs in the body causing the signs. Intestinal worms, dietary indiscretion (eating things she is not supposed to eat), dietary intolerance/sensitivity, a foreign body (especially in younger dogs), infection, inflammation, toxins, pancreatitis, kidney/liver problems, etc. Your vet can do a physical exam and some tests which could include a fecal exam, blood work, x-rays, ultrasound, etc. to try to determine what is causing the problem. Once a diagnosis is made they will advise a treatment plan to address the issue. Your vet can also address the itching of her muzzle and whining which may or may not be related. I hope this is just temporary and it resolves quickly for you and Moka.

Hi there. So sorry to hear that Ozzy is not well. Vomiting and diarrhea are not very specific signs for any one disease process or illness so I can't tell you what is wrong with him. I can tell you that he needs to be seen by your vet at this time. Multiple episodes of vomiting in a short period of time can be a sign of something serious underlying. You did the right thing by treating the diarrhea with a bland diet but now with the vomiting I think he needs to be examined. Hello, sorry to hear about Anya. Most GI sings of diarrhea may resolve with a bland diet of plain white rice, skinless and boneless chicken, and low fat cottage cheese. However, other more severe causes of this such as liver or kidney disease, inflammation of the bowel, and ingestion of foreign material may will require that your veterinarian examine Anya. If she develops persistent vomiting or diarrhea then I would recommend having her evaluated by her primary care veterinarian as she may need bloodwork and x-rays to be prescribed the adequate medications. In the interim, monitor her for persistent vomiting (more than 3 episodes in 1 day), diarrhea with blood, severe lethargy, or loss of appetite and contact your veterinarian if you note any. It sounds as Fify is suffering from a serious gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need to have an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.
