My Shih Tzu has diarrhea after pumpkin. How can I get him better?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 8 years old | 12 lbs

My Shih Tzu was having hard stools. Vet recommended pumpkin purée of 1 Teaspoon a day. It made his stool normal. But this morning he woke up and has loose stool, like diarrhea. I will stop the pumpkin. What can I do for him to stop the diarrhea or get him back to normal? He’s playful and seems happy. Thank you

I would just keep an eye on him to make sure the loose stool clears up, you may not need to change his diet to resolve it. One teaspoon of pumpkin, especially if you have been feeding it for a while, shouldn't cause sudden diarrhea, so it may be something ese that briefly upset his stomach. If his diarrhea doesn't clear up in a day or so and/or he starts feeling sick, get him in to see your vet. Sometimes diarrhea can be a symptom of constipation, as liquid can move around a plug of hard stool.

Poor Riley! He may have gotten into something that has upset his stomach and intestines. If he isn't vomiting, just the diarrhea alone may resolve with time, and you can wait until Monday. You'll have to let him out a lot so he doesn't have accidents in the house. If he starts vomiting, or if the diarrhea is bloody, or if he seems very depressed and droopy, you shouldn't wait until Monday. The pumpkin has fiber and this might cure the diarrhea alone. Good luck!
