My dog had an enema, now has diarrhea after eating. What should I do?

Your dog probably feels like she needs to poop but there is nothing left in her colon if your veterinarian did a complete enema. At this point I would try offering her a small now easily digestible food like some plain boiled chicken and rice, and see if she eats. She may need additional pain meds for a few days to get through the discomfort being impacted. I would also recommend you put her on a prescription diet that is specifically made for dogs with G.I. issues because it will help her stay regular. You may also want to ask your vet about a medication called lactulose. This medication can be given daily and can help keeps two songs and make them easier to pass. Make sure Coco has plenty of water as well. If she becomes dehydrated it will make it more difficult for her to poop. If she is still straining to poop, starts vomiting, stops wanting to eat, or has diarrhea, then I would recommend taking her back to your vet for a recheck. Otherwise just trying to keep her comfortable, exercising regularly, and drinking plenty of water and hopefully her stools will return to normal. All of this could be caused by her being dehydrated and still impacted with feces. Her panting is a sign of possible pain, from her impaction. Also she may not want to eat or drink because she is full of poop and/or nauseous. It is hard to say for sure without looking at her myself, but it sounds like she needs another enema, subcutaneous fluids to hydrate her, an anti-nausea medication (Cerenia) and then be placed on an easily digestible diet (i.e. Any hypoallergenic food or Iams limited ingredient, Evo brand, or Royal Canin hypoallergenic hydrolysis protein). Also your vet should rule out any type of foreign body in her intestinal tract. I hope your fur baby feels better soon.

Hormonal changes or diet changes (such as suddenly switching to the puppy food) can sometimes cause diarrhea post-birth, however if it is continuing, bringing in a fecal sample of Lacey's stool to your vet is a good next step. Your vet can check for common parasites or other issues that could be causing the diarrhea, especially if a bland meal hasn't helped. If the diarrhea continues and the fecal comes back negative, a more thorough exam from your vet is best.

I'd give him Glandex for the anal sac problems, and I can give you a home remedy for the diarrhea. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.

After a period of profuse diarrhea, the whole gastrointestinal tract is generally pretty empty. It can take several days for normal stool to form and pass normally. I wouldn’t worry about the little pellets - Lilly’s intestines are still just trying to get back to normal. The pellets mean that her overall stool quality is improving. Constipation rarely occurs right after diarrhea. As long as she isn’t straining while trying to poop, and is otherwise eating, drinking, and acting normally, it sounds as though things are improving. If she hasn’t pooped by Thursday, it’s worth having her rechecked by your vet. I try to give dogs up to 5 days to form normal stool after profuse diarrhea. I am very sorry to hear that Lelani has been so unwell. It sounds as though she is on a great treatment Plan. It can be normal for some constipation to follow a gastrointestinal upset. I would continue to monitor her at home for a few hours. If by the end of the day she still hasn't had a bowel movement, or if she seems in pain or lethargic I Would take her back into the veterinarian. The concern is for a foegein body obstruction. But because she seems happy and active it is less likely.

Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. This is not likely to be related. I recommend that you have Luna evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment.
