My dog has diarrhea after eating cooked cod. What should I do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Diarrhea can be due to parasites for example though that can also be seen with other conditions such as colitis or gastroenteritis. What you can do in the meantime is feed her a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice to help her with an upset belly. Otherwise, it would depend on the results of the fecal test. Your veterinarian could proceed with anti-diarrhea medications which may help in the meantime. Best of luck!

You should put her on a bland diet (lean, cooked meat with some rice or pasta) for a few days. If she continues to pass diarrhea over the weekend, or if she becomes lethargic or starts to vomit, you should take her to your local vets or call your emergency service.

If Mick has soft stool or diarrhea I would recommend just plain boiled chicken and white rice. If the stool doesn't resolve I recommend a veterinarian. If you notice any blood or he isn't eating I would then also recommend a veterinarian. Once he was on the chicken and rice for a few days and his stool is normal I would gradually wean him back onto the Pedigree. We cannot recommend raw diets due to the public health risk. Unfortunately, it is quite common for some dogs to experience GI upset ([vomiting](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/vomiting-1/) or [diarrhea](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/diarrhea-1/)) when switching food. As long as Bo is behaving normally otherwise, you may be able to [manage her at home](https://www.petcoach.co/article/6-things-you-can-do-at-home-if-your-pet-has-diarrhea). I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours. Resume feeding a bland diet (boiled boneless/skinless chicken breast mixed with plain cooked white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount as long as she doesn't vomit. Feed the bland diet until the stool is consistently normal (usually several days), then transition slowly to the new diet over another 5-7 days. [Veterinary probiotics](https://www.petcoach.co/article/probiotics-and-prebiotics-bacteria-aren-t-all-bad) may be considered to promote gut health. If she continues to vomit and have diarrhea, or develops lethargy, loss of appetite, or abdominal pain in spite of a bland diet, she will need to see a vet as soon as possible.

Then slowly add back in his normal diet. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! He may be showing signs of dietary indiscretion which can happen from eating something that does not sit well in the stomach. Clinical symptoms that can occur include inappetence, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Sometimes this resolves on its own. However, sometimes this does require some form of therapy which is mostly supportive in nature. Since he has developed diarrhea, have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to prescribe an anti-diarrhea medication.
