My dog still has diarrhea after a month, what else can I try?

I suggest you put Gus on a probiotic for a month to see if it helps. I strongly recommend you use Fortiflora (no human probiotics). Fortiflora comes as a box of 30 packets - one packet on food daily so this will give you one month to see if it helps. If it does, great, you can keep him on it indefinitely. If it doesn't help then you need to go to more testing like for inflammatory bowel disease or food allergies. When my patients have diarrhea after antibiotics I will usually prescribe a canine specific probiotic to help get the good bacteria loaded back up in the GI tract. My favorite is Proviable and it also comes with a paste to help firm up the stools. My second favorite is Fortiflora. I would encourage you to call your veterinarian and discuss the possibility of using one of these products. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon.

Hello. It might take 3-5 days minimum to see if the diet will work. Often, when we suspect a problem is due to a food sensitivity, the food trial is 6-8 weeks. So, it can take time to see if the diarrhea subsides. Just make sure she is drinking plenty of water & not losing weight. Also, make sure you communicate to your vet that the diarrhea did not respond to the metronidazole. She may want to continue testing, switch to another antibiotic or medication. Without knowing exactly what diets or medications you have tried it is very difficult to discuss options. I would recommend a probiotic/fibre supplement such as fortiflora/profibre, a hydrolysed or inteststinal diet (royal canin hypoallergenic / gastrointestinal) and a faecal screen to rule out parasites such as giardia if persistent

You can consider stopping both foods and feeding boiled skinless chicken or hamburger with plain rice. The addition of a probiotic like Fortiflora would also help regulate any disruptions to the GI tract. After a few days, slowly resume whatever diet you intend on feeding regularly. If diarrhea persists in spite of this, the addition of an anti-diarrheal and/or anti-inflammatory drug may be required.

I would recommend giving the food more time to help normalize the stool. You can also add in a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora to see if this helps resolve the diarrhea as well. With a normal stool sample and blood panel, the next steps are experimenting with diet - specifically a hypoallergenic prescription diet (such as Royal Canin Ultamino, which is definitely the most expensive option, but also the one that seems to work best in diagnosing food allergies. It takes eating ONLY the prescription food for about a month to see if it helps, and then if it does help you can certainly experiment with less expensive foods. If you she would having signs of food allergy you'd need to do a full 3 months, but for intestinal issues, you should see a response in just a couple weeks) OR a high fiber/easily digestible diet (such as Hills Fiber Response EN). Some dogs need continual probiotics to keep normal stool. Treating any underlying anxiety (if present) can also help. Finally, a gut biopsy, which is much more invasive and costly can be done. Since she isn't yet spayed, I would consider doing a gut biopsy when/if she is spayed because that would be minimal additional expense or trauma for her while she's already have an abdominal surgery.
