What caused my dog's sudden death after swollen gums and fever?

I am so very sorry that your dog passed away suddenly! Without seeing him in person, I can't say exactly what caused him to pass away unfortunately. The pale gums are a concerning sign, as they are caused by anemia and internal bleeding. It could be that he got into something toxic causing the pale gums, and then leading him to pass away. He also could have had a tumor that ruptured, or cancer that had spread. If you'd like answers, I'd recommend taking him into the vet for a necropsy (an autopsy for dogs). Doing that will hopefully give you some more definitive answers. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss.

Hello, I am very sorry to hear about your dog Brewki's passing. Unfortunately, I do not have enough information to give you a good answer. I would have to know what type of white blood cells were elevated and how low the red blood cell count was to be of much help. Without all of the medical records it is extremely hard to give council. If you would like, you can chose to do a private consult with one of our vets. That way you can chat back and forth and if you have copies of the bloodwork you can upload those results. I agree with the previous veterinarian though, the Clavamox and Doxycycline administration together likely had nothing to do with his passing. Those two antibiotics are often given concurrently without incidence. When an animal passes away unexpectedly, the only real chance you have to know what may have caused the death is to have a necropsy (autopsy) done on the body but even with that, often times we don't get a definitive answer. I am so deeply sorry for your loss, my thoughts are with you in this difficult time. It is of course difficult to know precisely what happened to Daisy without examining her, however, I would be concerned about two possible conditions. Bloat which is when the stomach becomes englarged and may rotate. This causes the blood vessels to constrict and affects blood flow to and from the heart. It is common in large barrel chested dogs. Another possibility is A foreign body obstruction, which occurs when something becomes lodged and Blocks the gastrointestinal tract, the bloackage can be complete and cause a rupture. Again it is difficult for me to know what could have caused Daisy to pass. If you need to know definitively, a local veterinarian may be able to perform an autopsy. I am sorry to hear of your loss but without a full post mortem exam there is no way of knowing what contributed to such a severe condition. Tumours in the legs generally do not resolve within 5days and the severe, progressive anemia would indicate a possible bone marrow condition or autoimmune disease which may possibly have been triggered by ticks or an internal tumour

There could be a number of things causing his sudden death such as exposure to toxins, cancer, liver failure, heart disease, or even the bone if it caused an obstruction. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain. You can ask your parents to take him into the vet for a necropsy (an autopsy for animals). This may give you some answers. I'm very sorry for the sudden loss of your dog. With his history I would be suspicious of an infection, heart disease, sudden bleeding or a toxin that could cause death. While Lyme disease can be serious his signs aren't specific for a Lyme infection. For a specific answer tissue and/or body fluid samples as well as a post mortem exam like an autopsy would be needed. However even with those we sometimes cannot pinpoint the exact cause of a sudden death.

I am so sorry for your loss of Lilly!! Losing a pet suddenly is never easy. Without seeing her it is hard to say what happened. She could have had something stuck in her intestinal tract which caused a rupture, or a parasite, or something more serious like cancer. If you need an answer, a necropsy would be the only way to diagnose the cause, but if this was several days ago, this would be hard to tell. I'm sorry I can't give you a better answer.
