My Yorkie has a dark, leathery patch on her knee. Should I see a vet?

This looks like simple hyperpigmentation but of course I cannot say for sure without an exam. I would watch it closely. If it is changing or bothering her I would have your vet look at it. If you are unsure, you could have your vet take a look at it just to ensure it is nothing to worry about. the darkening of the skin can be just normal age development or secondary to an old infection or inflammation. This looks like a staph skin infection. I suggest you use these medicated wipes on the affected area twice a day. There is a very common problem in Yorkies called a luxating patella that often causes these symptoms. Basically, the knee cap pops out of place and causes her to hold the leg up intermittently. This is the first thing your vet will probably check for - it can usually be diagnosed during the exam. If this isn't the problem, then she may have some other type of injury to her leg, such as a torn knee ligament, or something more minor such as a sprain or pulled muscle. I would recommend keeping her calm and quiet for the rest of the night. If she is still holding her leg up in the morning, then she should see a vet to find out what's wrong.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is hard to see well on these pictures but these look like calluses at the elbow. These are just basically the result of pressure on bony protuberances like the elbow. These are very common in large breed dogs like Labrador Retrievers. You can add more bedding for her to lay down. Otherwise, if no discharge or inflammation occur, it is ok to just monitor this. Good luck and have a good day!

That looks like the beginning of a callus on her elbow. Most dogs develop these on their joints like elbows and hock as they age from the pressure of lying down on them. As long as the skin continues to look healthy I wouldn't worry about it too much.

It looks like it was healing under the scab, however I am a little concerned about the area on the leg where this lesion is. THis is very close to the knee joint, which may mean that your dog had pain in this area and therefore was gnawing on it. I recommend you have this examined by your veterinarian a there may be a problem with his knee joint.

That could be an infection or area of irritation. You could have him examined which would give you a better idea of the cause. You could also watch it for a week and see what happens. Protect the area from licking or rubbing. Keep it clean and dry. You may apply a tiny dab of organic coconut oil once a day to moisturize it. If the lesion is still there in a week or if it is getting worse at any point, have him examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps.
