My dog has a cut on her gums and is bleeding. What should I do?

Constant bleeding from the gums is not normal and not that easy to stop. It could be a bleeding disorder or a gum/teeth condition, it needs to be checked by a vet, if it's a tooth that is causing this, or something that is stuck in the gums, your dog will need to be put under sedation in order to solve this issue.

You should take him to your vets without delay. If he is bleeding a lot you vet will have to put your dog under general anaesthesia to stop the bleed. Also, it is important to find out why he is bleeding. It could be due to a problem in the mouth (large wound or cut on the tongue, bleeding mass etc) but it could be a problem with blood clotting.

Oh my. At this age your pet shouldn't have too much dental disease to cause bleeding gums. This is definitely not normal and I worry that Abdul may either have a bleeding disorder (which can only be diagnosed and treated through your vet) or there may be multiple cuts in the mouth from something sharp your pet recently chewed on. I would highly recommend taking Abdul in to your vet to have them examine the mouth asap since a bleeding disorder is a possibility here. If there are cuts in the mouth that is causing this, then an oral rinse and oral pet friendly anti-inflammatory medicaiton will likely be prescribed. Oh dear! If Ginger is bleeding from her mouth and not moving, she needs to be taken to the vet immediately. Without being able to examine her, it's hard to say what might be wrong. She may have been hit by a car or sustained some other serious injury, or she may have a wound inside her mouth, or may be bleeding internally. Your veterinarian can examine her and may recommend blood work, x-rays, or other testing if needed to help determine what's wrong.

If Lucy is continually bleeding from the mouth, I have to disagree with your vet's assessment that everything is fine. There has to be some cause for the bleeding. Common causes of bleeding from the mouth would include some sort of trauma, dental issues, primary bleeding disorders (usually causing bleeding from the gumlines and inner lips), or some sort of bleeding mass inside the mouth that has ulcerated. I would be curious to know what kind of blood test was run. Was it a test to look at organ function, or was it a test to actually look at the blood's ability to clot appropriately? If your veterinarian did not perform an extremely thorough dental exam and oral exam, I would return and insist on it. You could also visit your local emergency clinic or another veterinarian to get a second opinion. Depending on the level of bleeding currently, you may want to go to the vet now rather than waiting. Since I can not physically see your dog, I always have to recommend going to the vet now in cases of active bleeding. Hope this helps.

I'm sorry to hear that Milo is hurt! The good thing is that the skin on the actual lips (the hairless part) heals very quickly, especially if there is a small or superficial cut. However, if this is because a mass or lump is on the lip and has suddenly started bleeding, I recommend having Milo seen by a vet as soon as possible to rule out certain forms of cancer. If Milo continues to scratch or rub the area, you can get him an E-collar or "cone" to prevent further trauma. If the area is bleeding profusely and not stopping, Milo should be seen by a vet immediately. I hope this helps and am happy to look at photos of the are and answer any other questions you may have!

It's unfortunately not possible to post pictures here, it's only possible through our private consultation system. A swollen lip can be caused as a result of a trauma (injury) or insect bite. If it is bleeding a lot I would recommend taking her to the vet as it is quiet difficult to treat at home, it's a delicate location to stop the bleeding or prevent the dog from licking it. If it's just bleeding a little bit and slightly swollen, it is likely to get better within a few days, try to keep the area clean as much as you can, avoid feeding wet food and make sure her water is changed several times a day.
