Why is my dog crying/screaming after giving birth to one puppy?

Be sure that Eris is eating and drinking approriately. She should be eating a high quality puppy food. She should have a small amount of vaginal discharge post birth but make sure there is not a large amount of blood or pass in the lochia. If possible you may want to take her temperature rectally, normal is 101-102.5. Also be sure the pups are latching on and nursing well that they don't appear sick or restless. If anything else is abnormal be on the whining I would recommend a veterinary visit for the whole crew just to make sure mom doesn't have a uterine infection, mastitis, or other complication of having puppies Good luck and I hope they all do well.

One important thing to consider is if your dog has any more puppies inside of her. If you are unsure then I would recommend taking her to the vet for an x-ray to see if any puppies are left. If she has not passed all the puppies by now she will need to have surgery to have them removed. If you were sure she has delivered all the puppies then her behavior is probably just due to anxiety and depression from losing her puppy. Give her lots of attention, love, and affection and she should be fine in a little bit. Help her get back to normal routine as this may help her feel better more quickly. I think it should be fine to let her outside with other dogs as long as you supervise them for the first few minutes to make sure everything is going to be OK. i'm sorry about losing the puppy. When puppies nurse, it releases oxytocin in the mother dog, which in turn causes uterine contractions. These uterine contractions can cause the blood to come out, and can cause her to shiver from pain. I'd have Ellie and her puppies seen by a vet on Monday to make sure everything is ok.

This could be due to fever or pain and I recommend a recheck by your vet as soon as possible. Low calcium levels can cause agitation and tremors but would be unlikely so soon after birth especially when you have started calcium already

It could just be that Moonie is feeling a bit stressed out with all the sudden changes -- giving birth, nursing puppies, caring for puppies, etc and so is whining some for a bit more attention or some help. Continuing to monitor mom and pups and watch for any signs of issues is a good idea. If she does show any sign of illness, the puppies don't seem to be thriving, or she seems in a lot of pain or distress in addition to her whining (IE pacing, squatting or attempting to go potty but can't, appears to be in labor again, heavy panting, squealing in pain, etc) then a vet visit ASAP is best.

She may have had obturator nerve damage from the delivery that is causing her limping but honestly, that is not very common in dogs. The limping may not be related to the delivery at all. I don't know. That is why a vet exam is needed. If medications are needed to make her feel better the vet will be able to give her something safe that won't hurt the puppies. Vaginal bleeding one week after delivery may be normal. If it persists longer than a total of 2 weeks I would have your vet check that out.

I don’t think she is depressed. I think she is probably sick. I worry about a uterine infection called a pyometra. It is a pus filled uterus. It doesn’t happen often just after pregnancy, but it can. If this is her problem it is life threatening without surgery. I would encourage you to take her to your local humane society or city shelter as often they will provide low cost or even free spay and neuter.
