Why is my dog whining after having puppies? Is she okay?

Be sure that Eris is eating and drinking approriately. She should be eating a high quality puppy food. She should have a small amount of vaginal discharge post birth but make sure there is not a large amount of blood or pass in the lochia. If possible you may want to take her temperature rectally, normal is 101-102.5. Also be sure the pups are latching on and nursing well that they don't appear sick or restless. If anything else is abnormal be on the whining I would recommend a veterinary visit for the whole crew just to make sure mom doesn't have a uterine infection, mastitis, or other complication of having puppies Good luck and I hope they all do well.

This does not seem normal but I don't have a good explanation for it, and I would recommend rechecking with your vet. She could have a uterine infection or inflammation, or other post partum problems and blood work might be recommended as the next step.

One important thing to consider is if your dog has any more puppies inside of her. If you are unsure then I would recommend taking her to the vet for an x-ray to see if any puppies are left. If she has not passed all the puppies by now she will need to have surgery to have them removed. If you were sure she has delivered all the puppies then her behavior is probably just due to anxiety and depression from losing her puppy. Give her lots of attention, love, and affection and she should be fine in a little bit. Help her get back to normal routine as this may help her feel better more quickly. I think it should be fine to let her outside with other dogs as long as you supervise them for the first few minutes to make sure everything is going to be OK. i'm sorry about losing the puppy. She may be dealing with an infection or an electrolyte imbalance that can occur in dogs who have recently given birth that could be causing her pain or leading to a feeling of weakness (hence the panting). Poor Sadie May! I'm concerned that her yelping and pulling at her fur may be signs of pain. Since she just had puppies, Sadie May could have retained a puppy, or could have an infection developing. Yes, I would be somewhat worried. It is possible there is a retained piece of placenta or puppy (likely non-viable) still inside her. Panting is usually indicative of pain/discomfort. I suggest you take Luna to the vet for an exam. If you take her in, be sure to take the puppies with you.

If she is whining then she is in pain even if you can’t see any external injury. Internal injuries or illness can manifest in many ways and because our dogs cannot talk to us all they can do whine or cry. I recommend you have your dog examined by your veterinarian as soon as possible.
