My dog has raw, crusty eyes with yellow discharge. Home care?

I would be concerned that Gracie’s eye is itchy and she is rubbing it. This would cause the hairloss, redness and flaky skin. She may have an underlying allergy or an ulcer or scratch on her eye that is making it uncomfortable. The terramycin should be safe to use in and around the eye. If the problem doesn’t resolve in 2-3 day though, then I would recommend taking her in to be checked out by your veterinarian. I hope this helps. It sounds from your description that Frankie Bean is having increased tear production and staining on the hair near the inside of her eyes. Common causes for this include allergies (which can be seasonal), conjunctivitis, blocked tear duct, corneal ulcer or abrasion, chronic dry eye, etc. You can use a saline eye wash to gently flush her eyes to get out any debris, and an eye lubricant like Dechra Paralube is safe for eyes. As for the crusties on her hair, use a warm wet washcloth 1-2 times per day to gently clean this away. Occasionally dogs with excess tearing can develop secondary bacterial or yeast infections that may need prescription medications to clear up. You may discuss use of anti-histamines or changes in food to help with potential seasonal allergies. Your vet may also recommend bloodwork to find a cause for her weight loss and lethargy. Arthritis is a common cause for soreness in the morning or after prolonged periods of rest.

I recommend cleaning this daily with a hot warm cloth to remove the discharge. Then when you have the area clean apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on the area below the eyes. That will help heal the skin and stop the discharge from sticking to the skin and fur. I would have Babygurl's eyes checked by your veterinarian. This looks like she has dry eyes, which is a decrease in normal tear production. With this condition the eye discharge is thick and sticky like this. There is medication for dry eyes which will increase the tear production. Dry eyes can be painful and she may irritate the corneas causing reduced vision without treatment, so please have her checked soon. Without pictures it is difficult to say for sure what this could be. This may be due to allergies, a skin infection (fungal or bacterial), etc. I would recommend using the below products to start. These can all be found online quite easily or at your local pet store. If her eyes are red, she is squinting or the discharge becomes colored, then she will need to be seen sooner. She could have a breed predisposition to tearing, a congenital problem where her eyelashes grow the wrong ways irritating her corneas or a blocked duct or allergies as you mentioned. Hi. I would be thinking allergies in her case. It can cause redness, itching, secondary infections, even crusts in the area. Pets can be allergic to the protein in their food, environmental allergens, or a combination of the two. When they are younger like Rey, i would lean more towards food allergies. They are usually allergic to the chicken, beef or lamb....the most common ingredients in most over the counter dog foods. I would make an appointmet to get her checked out and get her on medications for secondary infection and itchiness. And also discuss food allergies with your veterinarian.

Green/yellow, thick discharge strongly suggest bacterial conjunctivitis. You can clean the eyes with warm water and cotton buds twice a day, it should give Cooper some relief. However, bacterial infection needs antibiotics treatment to resolve, so you will need to try and get your dog seen by a vet as soon as they open.
