My dog has a crooked tail. Is it fractured or a natural kink?

Hello, sorry t hear about Lumi. His tail may indeed have a kink there either from some form of trauma when he was really young or from an birth defect. As long as he is not bothering at it then he may have this curled tail for the rest of his life. However, if you think it is painful, then it should be seen by his veterinarian and an x-ray may show if there is a fracture. If there is a fracture and it is causing him pain, then your options may include to manage the pain medically while the tail heals to to remove the damaged part of the tail. If it is broken, yes the vet can treat it. It will also be painful to her, and the vet can prescribe pain medication. Please do not give her any human pain medications as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I'd take her into a vet now. I hope this helps!

This could indicate a fracture of her tail or dislocation as the tail has joints just like the rest of the body. It could also indicate an anal gland issue or even a problem with the lumbosacral joint. Do not give your dog in a human medication as it could be toxic to dogs. I recommend having your dog seen by her veterinarian or an emergency veterinarian as she may need x-rays to diagnose the problem as well as dog safe medication for pain. keep her quiet and restrict her activity until she can be seen by veterinarian and do not try to manipulate the site at all.

It is possible that she has a fracture, which is causing pain and difficulty moving her tail and sitting. An x-ray at the vet can confirm or rule out this injury. A tail and a shoe in the wrong places at the wrong times could certainly have caused it.

These types of traumatic lesions can result in a fracture of the tail which can be quite painful. Even when a fracture is not present, this tends to result in a lot of pain. Hello. It's hard to know without seeing the dog but he might have a sprained tail, or "swimmer's tail." This is a common condition in large breed dogs like labs who overexert themselves by running for hours, hunting, or swimming. They overuse the tail and it becomes very swollen at the base, extending 2-5 inches toward the tip. These dogs won't wag or use their tails and are very painful when you touch this area. It usually resolves on its own but I like to prescribe anti-inflammatory pain medication because these dogs are usually really painful. If it isn't much better now, I'd take him to your veterinarian for pain meds!

While an anal sac issue is possible, other things like potentially a soft tissue injury to the tail, a fracture of one of the tail bones and even a condition called "lumber tail" appear more likely. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment.
