Why does my pug cry when I lift him or he stands on his back legs?

Pain and lameness in multiple legs can be a sign of polyarthritis (painful swelling in multiple joints) related to autoimmune disease or tick borne diseases like Lyme disease if there are ticks in your area. If he seems weak in his back legs back pain or a prolapsed disc would also be a possibility. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine him. If you think his barking and crying is a sign of pain or if you do think his back legs seem weak it would be best to take him to an emergency vet tonight.

It may be because you are picking him up incorrectly or it could be due to an orthopedic issue. When you pick him up, place a hand behind his back legs on his rump and the other hand under his chest. He should not be picked up by the scruff or by a limb. Front limb pain may be due to elbow, shoulder or neck issues. Hind limb pain can be hips, knees or lower back. If the pain persists, have Chico examined and xrayed by your veterinarian to diagnose the cause.

Poor Tobi! At his age, arthritis and back issues are very common. He should be seen by a vet to determine which joints are affected and if he can tolerate pain medication and joint supplements. I hope all is well!

Hello, The first thing that comes to my mind is chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain. Dogs with pain in these areas often hesitate to use stairs or jump on and off furniture. They may also want to lay around more and be generally less active. Pain in dogs can be similar to humans in that in can be caused by things like arthritis, disc disease, or a pinched nerve. It can also flare up and be worse at some times than at others, which may be why he vocalizes at some times and not at others. Anti-inflammatory drugs (a common one is carprofen) and nerve pain drugs (a common one is gabapentin) are commonly used to treat these conditions. Pain on extension of the hind legs can be indicative of hip pain, knee pain, spinal pain, or even a soft tissue injury in that area. I would recommend having Coco evaluated by a veterinarian so he/she can perform a complete physical, orthopedic and neurologic exam to better localize his pain. Based on what is found, he/she may then be able to prescribe an anti-inflammatory pain medication to help Coco feel better. I hope this is helpful!

Rafiki could have an issue with his kneecap that has caused it to pop out of the normal spot it's in. This is not uncommon in small breed dogs. It can make them prone however to tearing a ligament inside the knee. If this continues or becomes a recurrent problem, meaning it gets better then comes back, I recommend he get checked out by his veterinarian. Do not give any medication at home as it could be very toxic to dogs. You do not need to restrict his activity unless the limping persists for more than a day. In which case you should have him checked out by his veterinarian.
