My old dog whimpers when picked up and can't jump. Is it arthritis?

I would avoid picking up Tobi in this manner until we figure out what is going on. It sounds like when he is putting all his weight on his hind legs/pelvis. He probably either has some arthritis or nerve/disc pain causing the discomfort. I would recommend taking Tobi to your veterinarian for an evaluation and X-rays so you can determine what is causing the pain. He may also need some pain medication as well. I hope this helps. I'm interpreting your question to mean Toby is having *problems* jumping...? This could be a sign of pain with an orthopedic issue, such as luxating patellas (kneecaps that shift out of their correct place) or intervertebral disc disease. It could also be a sign of lethargy if Toby is showing any other symptoms of illness such as a decreased appetite, vomiting, or diarrhea. If this is a sudden change but Toby is acting completely normal otherwise, you may rest him for several days in case it's a minor injury - don't allow him to jump on/off furniture, carry him outside to urinate then right back inside, no rough play, etc. However, if it doesn't improve with a few days of rest, or if he's having any other symptoms, Toby should be seen by a vet to determine the problem and get him started on the appropriate treatment. Do not give him any medications without your vet's instructions, as no human pain medication is safe & effective for dogs, and anything you give could interfere with your vet's recommended therapy. Poor Sugar! She could have arthritis, a problem with an inter-vertebral disc in her neck or back causing her some pain, an infection, etc. If she is reluctant to jump on things and/or go up steps then it is probably a disc problem and she is experiencing some discomfort. The best thing would be to have your vet take a look at her to determine the cause and treat, She may need an anti-inflammatory and pain medications to help. Hope she feels better soon!

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I suspect Hank may have some arthritis. It is very common for dogs of all breeds, shapes, sizes to get arthritis as they age. The only true way to definitely diagnose arthritis would be with x-rays. I suggest you take Hank to your vet for an examination - there may be obvious clues to the vet that arthritis (or something else) is present. In the meantime you can try using a joint supplement that is made for dogs (not humans). I would use one that has the following ingredients: glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). The MSM is very important as it is a natural anti-inflammatory. Hello, The first thing that comes to my mind is chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain. Dogs with pain in these areas often hesitate to use stairs or jump on and off furniture. They may also want to lay around more and be generally less active. Pain in dogs can be similar to humans in that in can be caused by things like arthritis, disc disease, or a pinched nerve. It can also flare up and be worse at some times than at others, which may be why he vocalizes at some times and not at others. Anti-inflammatory drugs (a common one is carprofen) and nerve pain drugs (a common one is gabapentin) are commonly used to treat these conditions. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Diamond is adorable! It does sound like she is somewhat painful as she is hesitant to do normal activities. This can be caused by arthritis - pretty much any joint can be affected as well as the spine. Your vet can perform a thorough orthopedic exam and x-rays to isolate the signs to a particular part of the body. Certain conditions such as Lyme disease and autoimmune disease also cause generalized joint pain and can be ruled out with bloodwork. Since she’s such a large dog, odds are good that she’s starting to show signs of arthritis, despite having excellent familial hip screenings. Arthritis can occur with age and can affect any joint. The hips, knees, elbows, and vertebral column are all commonly affected areas. Joint supplements including glucosamine and chondroitin can help slow the progression of arthritis and prescription anti-inflammatory pain medications can help to manage pain.
