My dog has a cracked nail. What's the healing process and how long?

Poor guy. Most wounds heal within 7-10 days. Delayed healing occurs in older dogs and in cases of active infection. Nails can take several weeks to months to regrow. I hope this helps. Now this is likely going to continue to improve slowly but it will take time to do so. If he appears to be painful, it would be best to go to a veterinarian as they can proceed to cut the rest of the nail so it heals quicker and also send him home on pain control medications. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Blue! It’s hard to picture what the nail looks like. If he is that lame on the leg the nail should be evaluated. We do cut the nail back if needed. A cracked or torn nail is a constant source of pain. If you want to post a picture I could try to give you a better idea if Blue should go to the Vet. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Jack! Accidents happen and nail trims can be hard especially on pugs. They are the hardest breeds for nail trims, even at the Vet. If he is very squirmy and dislikes nail trims consider having it done at your Vet office and consider sedation. It may cost more but maybe we can avoid cutting the quick. Plus stressing out a pug is not a good idea. With that being said, If Jack is not limping, isn't excessively licking the nail and it isn't bleeding just keep the nail clean. If any of the above is happening then I would take him to the Vet for antibiotics, a bandage and pain medications. It should heal with out any complications for continued growth of the nail. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Max! if you are referring the the "thumb" nail that is the dew claw. If they tear or break that nail, the treatment is to cut it back to the pink vein or quick. If the nail has already been torn off to the pink vein and there isn't any residual nail hanging off then bandaging it for 3-5 days should be enough. Sometimes we do prescribe oral antibiotics and pain medications. The nail will grow back, which is a slow process. If there is still nail hanging on then it should be cut back as that is a constant source of pain. I wish Max the best!

If the nail is completely removed and exposing the nail bed, keep the toe as clean as possible to try to prevent infection. For my patients that have done this, I typically will place them on oral antibiotics and analgesics (pain medication) to prevent infection and keep them comfortable while the nail regrows. Some nails will not regrow normally if the nailbed was also injured. If Naria is limping on the affected paw, or the toe becomes swollen I would recommend having her seen by her veterinarian for appropriate medications to be dispensed.

Hello. This is such a common injury in dogs. Veterinarians deal with this by cutting the nail at the break & then applying an antibiotic cream mixed with a little lidocaine to stop the pain. The foot stays bandaged for a couple of days until the sensitive tissue starts to heal. From here, the nail will begin to grow out & Jack will be back to his old self.
