My dog is coughing, hacking, eating grass. Is it an esophageal issue?

He may also have some grass or another foreign object lodged in his esophagus. I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at Chuck so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Hi. Sorry to hear Riley is acting abnormal. Hacking could be coughing/respiratory in nature, or it could be GI in nature. Possibilities include upper respiratory infections, reflux, fungal infections, nausea, and many GI/tummy problems. To determine or lead us towards finding the cause, Riley will need an exam, and most likely some x-rays of abdomen or chest. Unfortunately he will need a veterinarian to examine him to start. Keep an eye on his stools - you may be seeing some diarrhea in the next day or two. I recommend feeding him small amounts of bland food today (white rice and boiled lowfat chicken). If you see any further vomiting, if his appetite decreases, or if diarrhea shows up, then I recommend bringing him in to the vet to be evaluated. He may need some supportive GI meds to turn around, or this could be the first sign of something more serious, such as a foreign body (something stuck in his GI tract), pancreatitis, etc. Hope this helps and he feels better soon!

There are a plethora of causes for cough and vomiting/regurgitation which is what it sounds like he has. Chest x-rays are the first diagnostic needed to assess the lungs for disease, so I would recommend having some taken. If they were taken initially, retaking them would be a good idea. With the vomiting, abdominal x-rays could be helpful as well. This is a case where a consultation would be helpful as I could ask more pointed questions and perhaps guide you with a better list of likely causes to the issue. I would give it a few minutes to see if it settles down. But if he continues to drool or cough Lou may have a foreign body stuck in the back of his mouth or his throat, and I would recommend a veterinary visit today. If it seems to go away then it may have just been transient, or a small piece of grass or something he's able to dislodge on his own. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Hacking/coughing that is continuous and in multiple dogs in one house is more likely to be infectious than anything else. I would be concerned about kennel cough. I would recommend having them seen by your vet. Depending on what your vet hears in the lungs/throat, they might give a cough suppressant, and might give antibiotics. Eating the carpet could be because they are irritated and think the carpet will help the way grass does (although this is unusual), or maybe they are stressed and are taking it out on the carpet. The other possibility is that something yummy was spilled on the carpet. I would clean the carpet well, keep them away from the carpet, and bring the dogs to your vet. Best of luck!

Hello. Unfortunately, it will take a hands on exam & some diagnostic tests such as x-rays to definitively say what is going on. She may have some chronic reflux & that is why the Pepcid seems to help. I would definitely take her off the grain free diet & switch her to a sensitive stomach formula. Hill's has an over the counter food for this. The reason I recommend this is many grain free foods actually have more fat added for taste & Mia may have some problems digesting the extra fat. I would try this first, then possibly go to a limited ingredient food made for allergies in dogs. There may also be an infectious component to the cough, so we really cannot rule out chronic bronchitis or heartworm disease. And some of the grain free diets have been linked with heart disease.
