Why is my dog coughing a lot and acting grouchy? Is she sick?

Misty is adorable!! If she was around other dogs within the last two weeks she could have kennel cough. I would recommend calling your veterinarian to have them listen to her chest. Coughs in dogs can be heart or lung related. If your veterinarian hears anything in Misty's lungs they may recommend X-rays looking for bronchitis or pneumonia. If she is lethargic, not eating, vomiting, has nasal discharge or has a fever I recommend a veterinarian sooner then later. It could be a respiratory infection, it could be a collapsing trachea, it could be kennel cough, or it could be something more serious like heart disease. I'd have her seen by a vet in the morning for this problem. The vet can diagnose what is causing it, and can treat her. I hope this helps!

I recommend that you have Harley evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include thoracic radiographs and bloodwork. Coughing, especially when accompanied by nasal discharge, can be a sign of an upper respiratory infection. However, it can also be a sign of a lower respiratory issue, such as pneumonia and it is concerning that Honey has some episodes of lethargy, as this indicates that she is not feeling well. This sounds like kennel cough. If she’s been around other dogs a few days ago she may have gotten this from them. Usually if you keep her quiet and she continues eating and drinking she should get over this without treatment in a week or so. If the coughing worsens or she stops eating or becomes lethargic then bring her in for an exam and treatment. They will probably give her antibiotics and perhaps something to stop the coughing. This sounds like she has a mild cold or upper respiratory infection. Generally these are viral colds and will run their course over a week or so. Just like with us no antibiotics are needed unless she develops a secondary bacterial infection. If the discharge becomes green and her condition worsens then please bring her right in for treatment. Yes I would recommend you take Toby into your vet for an exam to make sure he doesn't have a upper respiratory infection and rule out other health issues that could be causing his symptoms.
