My dog is coughing up snot. Is it allergies? How can I help her?

This cannot be treated at home without knowing what is going on. I recommend that you have Milo evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Jackie. Many states right now are experiencing outbreaks of respiratory problems in dogs. All of us in the profession are always worried about canine flu outbreaks. I would advise that if the condition worsens or doesn't resolve, have your veterinarian evaluate Jackie. There are many causes of coughing and having a thorough history would help narrow that down. Of course kennel cough, allergies, things in the air that are irritants, etc are all possible including many others. Again, with everything going on now across the United States, I would advise a trip to your vet's office with her. They can evaluate her and then advise some treatment or diagnostic testing to screen for a cause. They may advise fecal tests, blood tests, x-rays, or other tests to determine a cause. It could be a respiratory infection, it could be a collapsing trachea, it could be kennel cough, or it could be something more serious like heart disease. I'd have her seen by a vet in the morning for this problem. The vet can diagnose what is causing it, and can treat her. I hope this helps!

Hello. Hope is such a cutie! A cough may be due to inflammation, irritation, infection or something more serious like heart disease, heartworms or some primary lung disease. Hope does not look like an old dog, so a serious problem is less likely. If you have any honey, this is a great, natural way to ease a cough. Give her a teaspoon every 3-4 hours & if the cough continues & worsens into tomorrow, do have her evaluated by your veterinarian. Even though Harley has had her kennel cough vaccination she can still get kennel cough. Has Harley been to the dog park, day care, kennel or even the groomer? She could have picked it up anywhere there are dogs. If the cough gets worse, isn't eating, has a fever (rectal temperature above 103F) or difficulty breathing it is highly recommended going to a veterinarian as soon as possible. Kennel cough can be viral or bacterial and is typically viral. Some veterinarians will place dogs on antibiotics to prevent a secondary bacterial infection. Ideally a veterinarian should listen to any dog that is coughing. I would call your veterinarian when they are open and discuss this with them since she just went there the other day. If Princess is eating, playing, isn't lethargic and isn't vomiting you can continue the benadryl since it helps. If the cough is still present monday I would have her examined by your Vet. Possible causes are: Kennel cough, heartworm disease, collapsing trachea, heart disease, allergies, or other infections. I hope this helps and I wish Princess the very best!
