My dog's collar rubbed his neck raw. What can I put on it to heal?

If you think the lesion was caused by the collar rubbing, you can put some neosporin on it. The most important thing is to keep her from scratching. You may have to put a t-shirt or similar around her neck , so she cannot directly scratch the lesion. If the itching does not stop within 2 days or if the lesion starts to expand or ooze, you will need to stop the neosporin and take her to a veterinarian for an exam, as it may have been infected by bacteria. This could also be a fungus, in which case the neosporin will not work, If possible, wash her collar before putting it back on

Poor Cooper! It sounds like you're already on the right track for ruling out issues, however, environmental allergens can also flare up this time of year which may be causing the excessive itchiness. Since that area is very badly irritated and inflamed, I definitely agree with getting into your vet ASAP. Since it's right on his neck, you can try inverting an Elizabethan (cone) collar so that the cone part covers the irritation and the neck park sits up closer around his ears, so that it doesn't rub against the irritated spot and protects it from further scratching. Keeping the area clean and dry can also help reduce any secondary infections that may take hold in the irritated skin. An over the counter allergy medication such as Benadryl can also help by reducing any irritation/itchiness, and may also have the added benefit of making him a little drowsy so he's less likely to scratch. However, getting into the vet like you planned is the best course of action. If there is a big wound opening up, it gets worse, it oozes debris, or Cooper seems in major distress, getting into your vet sooner or reaching out to an urgent care vet may be a good idea.

I recommend keeping the collar off for now and not letting her swim or get wet for at least the next few days. I would not put any more neosporin or other ointments on the area, as this can trap moisture and delay healing. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! It could be from extra moisture due to his collar or a skin infection. Below is a link to an antihistamine to control scratching. Ouch, poor Dax. I would gently clean this with warm water and antiseptic soap. To keep him from scratching at it, you can put an Ecollar on him. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps!

That regimen maybe enough for this to heal. However if the redness does not go away or it starts to have an older or discharge then Coal needs to be seen by a veterinarian. Triple anabiotic ointment is unlikely to cause any harm. However if it is put on too thick can cause irritation. If Coal acts uncomfortable, has increasing redness, or develops a discharge then he needs to be seen by his veterinarian.

Do not cover the area this can create an environment that can make the infection worse. I would recommend an ecollar until you can get him into your regular veterinarian. Without seeing the lesions it is hard to say if it is something that should be seen sooner then later.
