My dog bit himself raw. Can I use Neosporin on his open wounds?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 12 years and 1 month old | 92 lbs

First, my dog has seen the vet recently 2 times and will be going back for a 3rd. In the mean time he has bitten himself raw, his skin is hot to the touch and he has open wounds. How to I help the open wounds when his appt. is not for 2 days and is just for an allergy shot. Can I use Neosporin and cover it so he cannot lick it off?

Do not cover the area this can create an environment that can make the infection worse. I would recommend an ecollar until you can get him into your regular veterinarian. Without seeing the lesions it is hard to say if it is something that should be seen sooner then later. If he is that uncomfortable then I would see if you can find another veterinarian that has an opening sooner.
