My dog's collar caused an open neck wound. What should I do?

1) take off the collar and do not put it back on.
2) cut or clip away the hair around the wound to facilitate cleaning the wound,
3) clean the wound with a mild disinfectant
4) let heal by itself. If there is no pus or infection there is no need to put an antibiotic on the wound.
If it looks like there is infection or if the wound is deep, or if you are not able to do steps 2-3, you should take Bella to a veterinarian for wound care.

Shave the hair in the area until you see healthy skin (this lesion is liskely bigger than is obvious). Disinfect with a mild wound cleanser and disinfectant. You can then put some Neosporin on it. Should the lesion get bigger or start oozing you will need to take Hank to a veterinarian for a skin exam. This could be a bacterial skin infection or fungal infection. Disinfect his collar or throw it away. Do not put another collar on your dog until it has healed.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Without seeing Dice Clark it is hard to say. If the wound is deep it may need to be sutured closed. Ideally, the hair around the wound needs to be clipped because it carries bacteria that can continue to infect the wound. You can clean it with a mild soap like Dial and water to rinse off some bacteria. Ideally I would have a vet see he wound to determine the treatment course and start antibiotics to prevent infection. You may want to remove Lucy's collar while this heals. Sometimes a rubbing collar can irritate a wound. Make sure that the collar isn't too tight, but usually injuring related to a too tight collar are more horizontal along the neck. If it does not appear deep and she isn't scratching at it, just keep clean and dry to and monitor to make sure it's healing. If there is any discharge or foul odors she may have an infection and require a veterinary visit.

My dog has shock collar wounds. How do I treat them at home?

If the wound is superficial (just on the skin), I suggest washing the area well with a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution. Apply a warm washcloth 2-3 times a day for 5-10 minutes at a time to soothe the area and promote drainage. Dog's collar caused neck wounds. What's the best home care?

That regimen maybe enough for this to heal. However if the redness does not go away or it starts to have an older or discharge then Coal needs to be seen by a veterinarian. Triple anabiotic ointment is unlikely to cause any harm. However if it is put on too thick can cause irritation. If Coal acts uncomfortable, has increasing redness, or develops a discharge then he needs to be seen by his veterinarian.

Dog's e-collar off, wound exposed. Should I take him to the vet?

My dog has neck wounds from a shock collar. Can I treat them myself?

Many corporate animal hospitals such as VCA and Banfield offer free first exams which can save you a $50-$85 office visit fee. In addition, many local ASPCA’s and humane societies offer low cost veterinary care. I strongly recommend calling around and making an appointment for Angel to be seen. Topical over the counter neosporin may not be adequate and would not be recommended if the holes are deep. Cleaning/flushing of the wounds with dilute chlorhexidine antiseptic and a course of oral antibiotics such as Simplicef will likely be prescribed. Pending the appearance of the skin, a topical steroid/antibiotic ointment and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory such as Rimadyl (carprofen) for pain may also be dispensed. Do not administer ibuprofen or acetaminophen as they are toxic to dogs. Good luck!

What causes dog neck rashes from collars and how to treat them?

I am sorry to hear about Bella! It looks like perhaps she could have developed a rash due to the contact with her collars. Some dogs seems more sensitive to having collars, or if the collars haven't been washed in awhile or got wet and were wet against the skin it can cause irritation. You can try washing the area with a colloidal oatmeal shampoo from your vet or the pet store, and letting her go without a collar when indoors. You can put a harness on or get a new clean collar or a rolled leather collar which may cause less irritation to the skin. If the problem persists, a visit to the vet is recommended.
