Why did my poodle collapse with purple tongue after food aggression?

A purple tongue is concerning for a lack of oxygen in the blood stream. You mentioned she is having trouble breathing as well! This sounds like it could be an emergency and I recommend to have Molly examined right away! Call ahead so they can be prepared for her. Try not to stress her in handling her and stay as calm as possible. Since she cannot talk and tell you what is happening, playing it safe is the best option. A sudden breathing problem can indicate a blood clot thrown into her lungs, a stroke or a heart attack. Any breathing problem is always worrisome and should be treated seriously. It could mean a few things-likely liver disease is included in these problems but could be from many things. Without seeing your bloodwork results myself, it's hard to give you an exact answer as far as why they are elevated. Congenital issues like shunts can happen in the liver (changing the way blood moves back and forth in our bodies and is filtered), but what you are describing sounds a lot like seizure like activity. The tongue turning purple indicates a lack of oxygen in the blood-it could be a problem with circulation. If he is seemingly disoriented-there is a condition called hepatic encephalopathy (where the toxin buildup in the liver causes neurological symptoms like you have described). I would take your pet back to your veterinarian for a recheck-tell them your symptoms and see if they offer ultrasound or further testing. Hello. This sounds like a mild hypoxic episode from hyperventilating. It is probably a normal response for your dog. If at her last veterinary visit everything checked out normal ( normal heart rate, pulses, gum color & no murmur detected ), then I would just assume that this was related to her panic, If, however, it has been more than a year since she was examined, then I would take her in. Tia may be dealing with seizures, or another type of neurological disease, or she may have heart condition causing her to have a condition called syncope, which can look similar to what you mentioned. So sorry about your dog. Besides it being caused by a seizure disorder, he could have something like laryngeal paralysis, collapsing trachea or be having a syncopal (fainting) episode from a heart problem. You could try to record one so your vet can see exactly what is happening. If the episodes continue and your vet is not able to control them, ask for a referral to a specialist for more testing. It might be a good idea to take a chest x-ray, have an ultrasound of his heart, and/or examination of his throat to look for laryngeal paralysis. Hope he gets better soon!

This is very concerning, especially in a young dog like Baby Girl. A seizure is possible, although typically stiffness or convulsions are seen and it usually takes awhile to recover from a seizure. A syncopal episode is another possibility - this occurs when there is an arrhythmia or other heart problem that causes fainting. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian right away - they can listen to her heart and may recommend taking an x-ray or checking blood work. Seizures or heart disease in a young dog can be fatal.
