My German Shepherd's coat color changed after parvo. What is it?

Thanks for visiting Petcoach. This breed often can have white or tannish colors throughout the coat. There are also some German Shephards who are purely white. This may be a normal aging change for her. As puppies lose their puppy coats the adult fur can change color and the skin pigment can darken also. If the skin looks normal with no sores I wouldn't worry about it. If she is itchy that may cause changes in the skin color. A veterinary visit is indicated if you are seeing abnormal areas on the skin.

That could be due to a skin infection or possibly just a normal pigmentation change. I would recommend that if this continues, you have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment. The skin is discolored but doesn't appear unhealthy. it doesn't not look rough or scarred so there is a good chance the hair will grow back. Although sometimes it grows back a different color or texture it will take a few more weeks before you see hair start to fill in.

I presume the area you are talking about is the area on the lower lip just behind the canine tooth where it is a splotchy pink color. That area is where the upper canine rubs when Shelby's mouth is closed, so the tissue in that area tends to get a little thicker for protection. Sometimes those changes can also result in some color changes. Since it is the same on both sides, I suspect it is normal. If either side looks different or seems to be irritated, I would certainly have your veterinarian examine her, but this picture looks normal. It is a little hard to tell based on these photos, and a closer look in person might make a difference, but this could definitely be a scar. If it is a scar, I'd hate to see what the original injury looked like! A veterinarian could take a closer look at the tissue, hair follicles, and how it feels, and make a better assessment on whether it appears to be a scar or diseased skin.
