I suspect this is either the development of cataracts or lenticular sclerosis. Both are age related changes. If they appeared rapidly, in combination with weight loss I would be concerned with a metabolic condition such as diabetes. It it was not sudden then this is likely a normal change associated with aging. If they are cataracts, they can be surgically corrected. Lenticular sclerosis is not reversible. Both can effect vision. A veterinary exam would help you sort this out.

It's true that older dogs develop normal aging changes in their eye that can cause a slightly cloudy or hazy appearance to the pupil - this is called lenticular sclerosis, and does not cause any vision problems or other issues.

However, cataracts are common in older dogs and can also cause cloudiness in the eye. It can be very difficult to tell the difference between these two conditions without an opthalmoscope, so I would recommend having Rudy's eyes checked by your veterinarian when you get a chance - he/she can do a complete ophthalmic exam to determine if anything is abnormal.

Cloudiness can be a normal aging change in the lens, called lenticular sclerosis, or it can be a more serious condition affecting vision like cataracts. Have a full eye exam done by your vet to know what's going on and if it requires treatment.

Why are my French Bulldog's eyes different colors and look drowsy?

Thank you for providing the pictures of Piggy they were very helpful! It can be a normal variation from dog to dog on the color of scleras. While yes, they are typically white with some blood vessels present, some dogs may have different concentrations of pigment cells (melanocytes) that can make some sclera darker than the other or even just a portion of it. It will be important to take Piggy to see your veterinarian or an ophthalmologist if you notice him squinting his eye, scratching at it, increased tear production (weepy eye) or you notice that he has any obvious defects on the surface of his eye. These signs usually indicate irritation or damage to the eye and can be quite painful for Piggy or others.

What causes red eyes in my French Bulldog puppy and is it serious?

This is a normal structure of the dog's eye, but it should not be out when the eye is open. When this happens, it's a sign of an eye infection, an injury to the eye, or a condition called Horner's syndrome among other causes. Any eye problem needs to be checked out by a vet promptly as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I'd take him into the vet in the morning. I hope this helps!

The picture is not very clear but I suspect your dog has nuclear sclerosis, which is progressive claudiness of the lens. This is age-related process and there is nothing to do to stop it. There is a chance that Tucker has cataract, which may be related to diabetes in dogs. Please, get your dog checked by your local vet to confirm the diagnosis and, if necessary, get treatment for him.

My 14-year-old dog has cloudy eyes and hearing issues. What tests?

There are some tests a veterinarian can perform to assess hearing and vision, however these are based on observation. You can make a noise behind Brandi to see if she reacts. You can drop something small and soft, like a cotton ball, in front of her to see if she responds. With age lenticular sclerosis, or a cloudiness of the lens is common in dogs, however we always want to make sure cloudiness isn't due to the formation of a cataract which can be associated with diabetes.
