My puppy got citronella oil for fleas. Is it safe and effective?

Ticks and mosquitoes will likely laugh at coconut oil and lavender oil in your puppy's fir. one problem with putting these oils into your puppy's fur is that is plugs up the skin's pores which prevents it from breathing and can cause skin issues. It is also not healthy if your puppy licks off any of those oils. I suggest you get Frontline Spray instead and spray your dog with that. It is safe in puppies. Frontline Spry is available in Trinidad and Tobago.

Both of those should be safe if applied to the outer coat. However, they will not effectively prevent fleas and ticks. The best way to prevent external parasites is by using a product from your vet. There are newer products like Bravecto and Nexgard that are oral tablets that prevent fleas/ticks for 30 days. This is the best way to keep your dog parasite free.

I would be very hesitant to recommend any product containing essential oils be used on dogs, but if a very light wipe was used, avoiding any areas easily reached by the dog licking, then occasional use should be fine. Flea collars do not work very well and some are toxic if ingested. I don't recommend using them on puppies, in case it falls off and the puppy tries to eat the collar. I recommend using a monthky product, like NexGard, Frontline, Advantage, or Revolution. You will also need to treat your house with an appropriate flea product.

Flea collars are safe for puppies and you can find ones that are specifically made for puppies in the bigger pet stores. Flea collars are somewhat effective, but not as effective as the topical and oral products for fleas. I would recommend giving those rather than getting the flea collar. I think that certain flea collars can provide good protection against fleas and ticks for the right dog in the right area. Seresto is the product that I most often recommend. The collar has to stay on all the time, and bathing or swimming can alter the effectiveness of the collar, so if Mia is frequently in water or you don't want her to wear a collar all the time it might not be a good choice. Preventic is another collar, but there is concern for toxicity if the collar is ingested and there may be some concern if there are children or pets in the house that will be chronically exposed. I have also seen over the counter collars that have essential oils or pyrethrins as the active ingredient - in my opinion these don't work well. Your best bet is to ask your vet which collar they think would work best in your area.

I would bet that your essential oil flea collar just is not up to the job of preventing and killing fleas. Teether is obviously itching in exact those places which are favorite dwelling and biting places of fleas. You may not see fleas as they only hop on to eat then hop off again.
