My dog has a chronic cough. Is it safe to breed her and when?

That would depend on the underlying cause of it. If it is due to an upper respiratory tract infection/inflammation antibiotics may be given without problems/side effects for the pups. Hi there and thank you for choosing Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Coughing can be an indication of illness related to either the respiratory or cardiovascular systems, or both. Dogs who have been around other dogs who have kennel cough can develop the illness as it is contagious. It is also a self-limiting illness meaning that it will go away on its own in about 2 weeks time. If Angel is experiencing coughing at certain times like at night or during exercise this points more to a problem with the heart. There are of course other things that can cause coughing. While It does not sound as though you need to rush to the vet with Angel, It wouldn't hurt to have her examined by a veterinarian. If you notice the cough worsens, does not appear to be resolving, her behavior changes, she seems to tire quickly after exercise, etc. Angel should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Hello. I am not sure why you want to breed more mixed breed puppies when there are so many available in shelters. The only reason to breed a dog is to improve the breed, not add to the overpopulation problem. Please think about this before allowing your mixed breed dog to become pregnant. Hi there, Breeding can be quite the undertaking and you're correct to have concerns. Chihuahua's have narrow birth canals and often need c sections to get their puppies out. I'm not sure how much she weighs, but a difficult birth certainly could occur. I would consider whether you want to take the risk of breeding and go from there. Coughing due to changes in weather is considered to be an allergy (allergic bronchitis). If this is the case, then there isn't anything over the counter that will work for this condition unfortunately. You will have to contact your vet to have her seen and treated with prescription medication, which is typically a steroid. Best of luck with your pet Karma and I hope that her cough resolves soon! If she is spotting she should be examined by your vet. Bleeding that much this far after breeding is not normal. She really should not be bred if she has a collapsing trachea as it is a hereditary condition. She is quite young to already have collapsing trachea so it must be pretty significant - either that or she has something else going on all together. I strongly recommend you speak to your vet before breeding her - you need to get a proper diagnosis as to what is going on with her trachea and honestly, she should not be bred until she is her normal body weight.
