My Pomeranian is bleeding heavily after breeding. Is it a miscarriage?

Hi, we noticed our 2 year old Pomeranian recently got into heat on September 24 and she tied with our male Pom on October 6 and again on October 8. It’s been almost 3 weeks since we noticed her heat and 2 days ago she started spotting but today all day she’s been bleeding quite a lot more than normal. She leaves blood stained everywhere ! I’m just scared that she’ll lose a lot of blood or have a miscarriage. She is also obese for a Pomeranian and we think she has a collapsed trachea as well.

If she is spotting she should be examined by your vet. Bleeding that much this far after breeding is not normal.

She really should not be bred if she has a collapsing trachea as it is a hereditary condition. She is quite young to already have collapsing trachea so it must be pretty significant - either that or she has something else going on all together. I strongly recommend you speak to your vet before breeding her - you need to get a proper diagnosis as to what is going on with her trachea and honestly, she should not be bred until she is her normal body weight.

The best way to know if the pups are ok is to ultrasound the remaining pups and count the fetal heart rates. If mom is eating and drinking and resting ok, she is probably fine. I would find a vet who can do ultrasound and check those fetal heart rates.

My dog is bleeding after heat, is it a miscarriage or normal?

This doesn't sound like a miscarriage. The blot clot is probably just normal from the heat cycle. I would not be worried about it unless bleeding persists. As a side note, a puppy at 9 months old is probably fertile; rarely are they "blank". They become sexually mature and able to breed a female at about 6-7 months of age. I suspect that she will get pregnant. If you don't want this mating I suggest you speak to your vet about a mis-mating injection.

These signs are compatible with pain and possibly neurological signs are present. A trauma at the level of the cervical spine could be present. I would recommend an immediate check up at your local veterinarian to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately.

Given her age and that she has had a recent heat, she may have a uterine infection (pyometra). This can be a serious infection if left untreated. Crystal should be examined by a veterinarian to be safe and treated if indicated. Surgery may be required if she has pyometra.

My dog is groaning and bleeding vaginally. What should I do?

If she is groaning and has bloody discharge form the vulva she needs to see a vet. If she is pregnant she may be having a miscarriage or a problem birthing. If she is not pregnant she may have a uterine infection, a bladder infection or bladder stones. These are not things you can treat at home. She is obviously uncomfortable so I highly recommend you get her to a vet.
