My dog choked, then ate. Could he still have a partial blockage?

Hello and thanks for your post! He likely got a little frightened by the noise and may have choked on his food a bit, but he should be okay if he's calm now and has no signs of choking or distress. If he continues to cough or begins coughing tomorrow, he may have aspirated some of the food and should be seen by a veterinarian, but I think this may be unlikely. It sounds like whatever Chewy had stuck in his throat has passed. Since he is acting normally, keep an eye on him for now. Should that behavior start again or he stops eating, take him into a vet immediately. Best of luck.

Hello. I honestly would not rush her into an emergency clinic based on one episode of vomiting. Eating well & having normal & regular bowel movements are definitely a sign of a healthy GI tract. A blockage would make her very sick. If she continues to vomit, quits eating, develops any diarrhea, then see your veterinarian, but there is no way 1/6 of a paper towel, even in a small dog, would cause a blockage. She would be too uncomfortable. Maybe something was stuck before but may have cleared by now. Since she is sleeping, just keep an eye on her for now. If this behavior continues or she develops other signs such as a loss of appetite or lethargy, have her seen by a vet. Best of luck and happy holidays!

Wow, that was definitely stuck there for a while and it must have just came unstuck. This is quite unusual and means that there was a partial blockage the whole time. Complete blockages and sometimes partial blockage can cause life-threatening complications, but Rocko does not appear to be having those signs. If he is eating, drinking and defecating OK, then there is no need to rush him to the vet at this time. If he does become blocked, he would stop eating, stop defecating, vomit and would generally be appearing depressed. If you notice the combination of those signs happening, then he should go to the vet right away. I hope that helps and Rocko gets better soon.

I do not see any need to worry at this time. If it was stuck in his throat, then he would be continually gagging and coughing. There is also not much of a chance it would be causing problems in the stomach or intestines, because these are digestible. Signs of a blockage are: not eating, not pooping, vomiting, and acting very depressed/painful. If you happen to see these signs, then this would warrant an urgent trip to the vet. Otherwise, he seems to be doing OK, so I wouldn't be concerned. I hope that helps and all is well with Coby.

Yikes! I'm so glad you were there to stop this from becoming a much worse situation! His mouth should heal just fine. Offer some soft food as hard food may be a bit painful for the next couple of days, other than that you don't need to change anything. If it hasn't healed well within 4-5 days, take him to the vet. Keep an eye on the other dog as well; while you were able to get them untangled quickly when he was choking, sometimes dogs can develop whats called "non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema" after a choking incident, even a brief one. If he starts to cough, seems to be breathing faster than normally or is labored at all in his breathing, take him to the vet. Oxygen therapy may be needed, these guys usually recover but they do often need to spend some time in an oxygen cage. He very well may be fine and not develop these symptoms at all, but it is something you need to watch out for over the next 12-24 hours.
