Why is my dog still chewing her paws and nails after a trim?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Gizmo may be chewing his paws from anxiety / stress, allergies or pain. I would recommend bathing him with a sha.poo such as Duoxo PS calm shampoo and bathe twice weekly. I would also recommend malacetic conditioning spray, welactin omega 3 fish oil and essential 6 spot on by dermoscent. If this is allergy related, benadryl is an option that can also be used in cases like this. The typical recommended dose is 1mg per 1lb of body weight every 12 hours. If there is no improvement, I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at gizmo to help determine what else could be the cause. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Hello. It does sound like possible allergies, which can start at any age, most commonly around 1-2 years of age. But we can see the presence of mange mites & nail bed infections too. To rule these out, you will need to see your veterinarian who can perform some skin scapes around the base of the nails & look under the microscope for the presence of mange mites. Hello. These are commonly a chronic infection that has both bacteria and yeast involved. It is often necessary to treat with an oral antifungal plus a form of antibiotic (either topical or oral). These types of infections can take many weeks of treatment (6-10) to clear completely. A recheck with a veterinarian is needed in order to discuss the appropriate medications necessary to effectively treat this, but be prepared for a longer course of treatment than just the typical 10-14 days. Hello, and thank you for your question. Possible causes for Millie's symptoms include skin allergies, skin parasites (mites, fleas), bacterial infection or fungal infection, or a combination of these. Was there any new food or treat introduced prior to these problems starting? If so, I would start by eliminating this. You can also try soaking Millie's feet in a shallow bath of Epsom salts and lukewarm water, to help provide some relief. Bathing her with a gentle aloe and oatmeal type shampoo may help to wash off any surface allergens causing irritation. If she is chewing or biting at her skin or paws, you wil need to put an e-collar (cone) on her head to prevent further damage. If these suggestions do not help, I would recommend taking Millie to the vet. They can perform tests to check the underlying cause, such as a skin scraping, skin cytology or fungal culture. At minimum, they can prescribe medications to help with her itchiness and treat suspected bacterial infections. I hope this helps, and that Millie is feeling better soon!

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!
