My dog is shedding, has dry skin, and chews her paws. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 65 lbs

My dog is a one year old female golden retriever lab mix she has not been fixed. She is shedding hair more than the normal amount of shedding, her skin is dry, she is chewing at her paws.

Hello, and thank you for your question. Possible causes for Millie's symptoms include skin allergies, skin parasites (mites, fleas), bacterial infection or fungal infection, or a combination of these.

Was there any new food or treat introduced prior to these problems starting? If so, I would start by eliminating this. You can also try soaking Millie's feet in a shallow bath of Epsom salts and lukewarm water, to help provide some relief. Bathing her with a gentle aloe and oatmeal type shampoo may help to wash off any surface allergens causing irritation. If she is chewing or biting at her skin or paws, you wil need to put an e-collar (cone) on her head to prevent further damage.

If these suggestions do not help, I would recommend taking Millie to the vet. They can perform tests to check the underlying cause, such as a skin scraping, skin cytology or fungal culture. At minimum, they can prescribe medications to help with her itchiness and treat suspected bacterial infections.

Bathing her with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula can help to soothe the skin. Hello, sorry to hear about Jack. It sounds like he is having allergies. Allergies in dogs can be associated with the environment, food, or even fleas (flea allergy dermatitis). Make sure that Jack and any other pets are getting their monthly flea control. If he continues to itch, then he may need allergy medications which can be prescribed by your veterinarian. Have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon if his signs persists. You can also try to wipe his feet and body down 2-3 times daily especially after coming indoors with skin sensitive baby wipes. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). My dog has a severe rash & scabs despite Apoquel. Is it allergies?

I can see a lot of redness and bumps on Millie's skin, which can be indicative of a skin infection (bacterial or fungal) or skin mites. Unfortunately, dogs with skin allergies can easily develop infections. The reason for this is that with the chronic scratching, the natural barrier of the skin is compromised, allowing bacteria to enter. Millie may need antibiotics or a medicated shampoo to clear up the infection, so she does need to see a vet. I recommend showing your vet these photos, especially if Millie doesn't like being examined. You can also try an omega-3 supplement for her along with Apoquel to keep her skin healthy.

Hello, thank you for your question about Brownie. Based on the photos you've attached and the symptoms that you describe I would be concerned that Brownie has allergies. Allergies can be secondary to food or the environment, among other things. Often when dogs have bad allergies and they lick and chew alot they can develop secondary bacterial skin infections, which could explain the odor that you are noticing. Since this has been going on for a while and has not improved I would recommend having Brownie evaluated by a veterinarian. They can perform an examination and discuss the need for any additional skin testing such as skin scrapes, impression smears, etc. Depending on the findings of these tests they can then determine the appropriate treatment for Brownie. Skin lesions like you are describing can be due to a variety of causes, including allergies, contact irritation, heat, an infection, or another underlying issue. While I do think a diet trial may be helpful, dogs typically are allergic or sensitive to proteins in food, not grains, so a switch in the protein basis of the diet (including all treats!) may be beneficial. I would recommend having it re-evaluated by a veterinarian, and further diagnostics (such as a cytology, which examines the skin under the microscope) done to determine what may be causing it, so a long-term plan can be made.
