Why is my 1-year-old Border Collie still chewing after teething?

If Rocky is close to a year old already, he definitely has all of his adult teeth unless there is some sort of abnormal pathology. A dental exam by a veterinarian would be able to reveal if this is an issue. Assuming that the teeth are normal, it sounds like a behavioral issue that needs to be nipped in the butt as soon as possible. Pitties are great dogs, but they are very powerful and even playful bites can results in some serious damage. Whenever you see Rocky biting or destroying something that is not meant to be, his attention has to be diverted to something else. You should be carrying a toy with you at all times as well as treats in order to praise the appropriate behaviors. If you find that he is biting people, I would recommend teaching him the "touch" command. This can be utilized in order to divert Rocky's attention from something negative and to get him to touch something else. Since he likes to bite, I would not have him start with touching your hand. Use a wand, stick or anything you would like. Eventually once the command is taught effectively, Rocky should be able to come and "touch" from across the room. This sounds like normal mouthy behavior. The molars (back teeth) are used to grind with, so it isn't unusual in any way. If you wish to stop her from destroying blanket rugs however, I would recommend working with a personal dog trainer to help her divert that energy into something else. Dogs can be destructive in the home with their chewing. It can be harmful to the dog as well if she ingests an object she chews on. This can become a major abdominal surgery to remove the foreign object. Do your best to provide indestructible toys to satisfying her urge to chew. I would recommend to take Meara into the vet to make sure her teeth are growing in normally and that everything appears normal. If everything checks out normally, then I would suspect behavior. Sometimes dogs will just start playing with different toys for no apparent reason. Definitely keep her crated until this phase has passed. Many dogs ingest items that get stuck in the intestines and need surgery. Switch her toys about once a week as this will help to keep her interest. Hello. Chewing at this age is very normal & is a sign of teething behavior. Puppies also learn in this manner, too. It is your job to provide Lucy with appropriate chewing substrates & gently guide her to avoid those which may be harmful ( electric cords, house plants, items that are small enough to be swallowed ). Make sure shoes, eyeglasses, watches, tv remotes, jewelry are picked up or not left on low tables ( can you guess what I have lost in the past !). Kong toys are tough products made for dogs & puppies that can be packed with tasty treats such as kibble & peanut butter. This should keep Lucy busy for hours.
