My puppy chews everything! How to stop biting & when does teething end?

This is very common for this age since they are starting to lose their baby teeth and get their adult teeth at this time. Make sure he has plenty of chew toys and bones to play with. I like plain flat raw hides. They can have one a day. If there is something particular he is chewing on, you can put a dab of Tabasco or bitter apple spray to prevent the chewing. This will sometimes helps. When you aren't able to monitor him I would put him in a crate so he doesn't chew something that might harm him. Give him some time as he won't feel the need to do this forever. I hope this helps!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Chicago. Puppies start teething around 4 months of age and this continues until they are about 7-8 months of age. So a lot of his chewing is most likely related to teething. You will need to keep things picked up and only allow him access to safe toys. The urge to chew should decrease over the next few months. Hi, I totally understand you chewing ca be a bit of a problem during these early months. You need to try to be consistent and not to give up and play with your hands. Even during normal play, interrupt play and ignore him if suddenly starting to play too rough. You should try to praise calm behaviour and when he manages (eventually) to sit and be focused. As times goes by, he will get better and better and hopefully grow in a well balanced adult !

Poor puppy! Soak a wash cloth in cold water and freeze it. Then give it to him, but make sure to watch him closely the whole time. There are also toys you can get from the pet store that can be frozen and then given to him to help with teeth pain. Do NOT give him any human pain medications, many are toxic to puppies and can be fatal if given. Speak to his vet about prescribing him safe pain medications. I hope this helps!

You can also try putting these toys in the freezer, which some puppies like as it helps soothe their irritated gums. When Shadow tries to bite you, give a firm "ow" or "no". Never hit him or use any other form of physical punishment. Instead, offer him his chew toy to play with on his own. Walk away, cross your arms and legs and do not give him any further attention. If this does not work, you may need to find a toy that is more rewarding for him, such as putting something even more tasty into the toy. The good news is that teething will finish by 6 months, so this should be a temporary behaviour. However, we want to teach Shadow what is appropriate to chew on, and what is not. No, please do not cut your puppy's teeth - this would be very painful for him, and could also cause infection and other serious problems. Biting and mouthing during play is very normal behavior for puppies, and will resolve on its own with age. In the meantime, make sure that Pocholo has a variety of different toys to provide an appropriate outlet for this behavior - long floppy rope or fleece toys for tugging, plush toys for biting and carrying, and smaller toys for chasing and fetching. It can also be helpful to provide lots of different items to chew on - things like bully sticks, cow or pig ears, rawhide chews, and puzzle toys such as a Kong stuffed with peanut butter. If you are playing with him and he bites you, just redirect him to one of his toys and use that to play with him instead. If he bites your hands when you pet him, calmly stop petting and ignore him until he calms down. You may only be able to pet him when he is sleepy right now, which is fine - just be patient and consistent with him as he grows, and the mouthing will stop on its own.
