My dog chewed a sewing kit but seems fine. Does she need a vet?

A tiny piece of plastic like this is unlikely to cause any problems with Ella. You can monitor her for signs of GI obstruction which would include vomiting, decreased appetite, abdominal pain, and lethargy. If these occur, then she should see her vet right away, but I don't expect that to occur with the small amounts she may have ingested, they will likely just pass through her GI tract. You can feed her something high in fiber to help the passing, such as a piece of whole wheat bread or a teaspoon or two of canned pumpkin.

If she chewed it to bits, it should pass without any problems. If she swallowed it whole, there is a slim chance it could cause a gastric or intestinal obstruction. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or straining to defecate. See your veterinarian if necessary. You can mix in some cooked brown rice or add a couple tablespoons of plain, canned pumpkin (NOT pie filling) to the meals to help cushion it and push it through.

It may be serious but not necessarily. You should take your dog to your vet to take an x-ray to see where the needle is (it could got stuck in esophagus and it this case it should be removed). If the needle is in the stomach you will have to wait 24-48hrs for the needle to be passed. If in any doubts the second x-ray should be taken. If your dog develops signs of vomiting, vomiting blood, abdominal pain, lack of appetite he will need emergency surgery to remove the needle. However, most of the dogs will pass a needle and surgery is not required.

It can take up to 72 hours for the stuffing to pass, so I wouldn't be worried just yet. There are a couple of possibilities if you don't see any stuffing in Ella's feces: One, she didn't actually eat any. Two, it's moving very slowly through her GI tract. Three, it is stuck in her system. Keep monitoring her and her feces through the end of the week and she's acting normal, then I would suspect she didn't actually eat any of the stuffing. I would only be concerned if Ella stopped eating, become lethargic, and developed other symptoms such as diarrhea or constipation.

If she has swallowed a piece of flat material (not the actual knot) I would not be immediately concerned (that is unless she was exhibiting distressed breathing indicating it was still in her throat). Fabric will often pass uneventfully and the addition of mild laxatives for a few days can help encourage this. Any vomiting or abdominal pain would raise concerns about possible obstruction and would warrant immediate veterinary attention should it develop (your vets office should have contact information for your nearest emergency clinic if required outside of normal hours)

Hi, I think if the pieces of plastic are quite small, they are likely to pass through his tummy without causing any issues. At this point in time, you can keep an eye for any signs relating to gastro-intestinal problems. Is Cashew eating well and passing normal faeces ? Is any sickness occurring ? If you haven't noticed any abnormal signs, you just ned to keep an eye on his faeces over the next few days, and make sure he is not straining nor in any pain. Keep an eye on her for any adverse symptoms but as long as she is behaving normally, I don't think she needs to see the vet right now. I'm having trouble getting the photos to enlarge for me, but what I can see of the toy makes me think that she should be able to pass a piece with too much trouble.
