My dog chewed a nectarine pit. When to call emergency vet? Symptoms?

Oh, dear! With peach pits, there are two main concerns: if it was chewed up quite a bit before swallowing, there is a chance of a toxicity issue since peach pits do contain small amounts of cyanide. If he swallowed it whole, it's very likely to cause an intestinal obstruction as it moves through his GI tract, which would require surgery. If he just ate it, I would recommend having him seen by a vet right away - he/she can give an injection to safely induce vomiting so that, hopefully, he will throw it up and you won't need to worry.

The symptoms of obstruction include vomiting, poor appetite, abdominal pain, lack of stools. The signs usually start within 24-48 hrs. If Nene chewed the pits, there is a small chance of cyanide intoxication. The signs to look for are panting, red gums, disorientation. They normally start a few hours after toxin ingestion. However, if Nene ate only two pits, he will likely pass them in his stools and he will not show any worrying symptoms.

If there are no signs of distress, abdominal discomfort, lethargy, inappetence, vomiting, diarrhoea or straining to defecate, I would not be worried about it as it is likely to pass through the whole intestine.

Hello, if this occurred within the last hour, you need to have your veterinarian evaluate her so that they can induce vomiting. If vomiting is successful, then Lucy may be free of risk from the toxicities of cherry pits. If it has been longer than this, still have her evaluated, however she may need to be hospitalized to be monitored for toxicity. Hello. The biggest problem with an ingested pit is the possibility of an obstruction. Apricots are a bit smaller than some other stone fruits & your dog is quite large so I would opt for a watch & see if anything bad happens. Vomiting, loss of appetite, a painful abdomen are all potential signs of a problem, but I would guess that Moose will be fine. However, it is still warranted to monitor closely for any signs that could be indicative of a gastrointestinal obstruction such as vomiting, inappetence and abdominal pain. If these are observed at any point, have Aqua evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible as that may represent a gastrointestinal obstruction which most of the time requires surgery. If this is going to be an issue, usually symptoms can show up to a week after the event typically. Some dogs do develop transient gastrointestinal upset with vomiting, diarrhea and inappetence when they ingest avocado so if she also ate the avocado per se then this may be an issue. Apricots and the pits can be toxic (cyanide poisoning) but a dog Reggie's size would need to ingest many pits at once to get close to a toxic dose of cyanide. Clinical signs of toxicity would be expected rather quickly if a toxic dose was ingested, so if no signs after a few hours of ingestion then he is likely fine. I would certainly try to prevent him from eating these though. Number one, they are toxic and, number two, the pits can cause a blockage in the intestines which would require emergency surgery to correct.
