My dog ate cherry pits. Is it an emergency? What do I do now?

Oh, dear! With peach pits, there are two main concerns: if it was chewed up quite a bit before swallowing, there is a chance of a toxicity issue since peach pits do contain small amounts of cyanide. If he swallowed it whole, it's very likely to cause an intestinal obstruction as it moves through his GI tract, which would require surgery. If he just ate it, I would recommend having him seen by a vet right away - he/she can give an injection to safely induce vomiting so that, hopefully, he will throw it up and you won't need to worry.

The poisonous part of the pits are contained in the inner kernel so unless the pit is cracked open and the kernel missing, im not worried about that. That gnawing probably resulted in only tiny bits -if any- of the pit being swallowed. A dog this size is unlikely to have problems with that. Of course he may have a sensitive stomach or have gotten into something else in the trash that would cause a problem. If you see more than 3 episode of vomiting, severe lethargy, or loss of appetite lasting more than 8 hours, see an emergency vet to make sure he’s ok. Best of luck to you and Huxley!

The symptoms of obstruction include vomiting, poor appetite, abdominal pain, lack of stools. The signs usually start within 24-48 hrs. If Nene chewed the pits, there is a small chance of cyanide intoxication. The signs to look for are panting, red gums, disorientation. They normally start a few hours after toxin ingestion. However, if Nene ate only two pits, he will likely pass them in his stools and he will not show any worrying symptoms.

Cherry pits do contain trace amounts of cyanide, which is toxic to dogs - but normally, even a small dog like a Yorkie would have to eat a large number of them to cause a problem. The pit should pass through uneventfully, but if Jordan has any vomiting, lethargy or other problems I would recommend taking him to the vet for an exam to be safe.

It is important to recognize that plum pits can be dangerous. They contain cyanide which is toxic to dogs. They can also cause an intestinal obstruction in such a small dog. I would be worried about the vomiting. If the vomiting continues or she starts showing any other symptoms of being sick then you need to get her to a vet ASAP.

A partial or complete intestinal obstruction is always a concern when pits of any kind are ingested, especially by a smaller dog such as Harley. Given his symptoms, hospitalization for IV fluids, IV medications and follow up abdominal x-rays may be indicated since conservative treatment has been ineffective. A series of abdominal x-rays using contrast media, such as Barium, may diagnosis a partial or complete obstruction. Pancreatitis is also a concern as is cyanide toxicity from the cherry pits (if he ate enough of them).

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. So sorry to hear that Harley is having this issue. Cherry seeds/pits, as I am sure you know by now, are toxic to dogs. They contain cyanide which is highly toxic. Since the bonding of the chemical compound of cyanide must be stopped as soon as possible, treatment will be the top priority at this point. Treatment needs to be instituted ASAP. The longer you wait, the worse the prognosis. He should have been placed on intravenous fluids and not just given SQ fluids. SQ fluids is not enough to flush out his system. Sodium nitrate/sodium thiosulfate should be given if your vet has it available. Hydroxocobalamin (vitamin B12a ) is also used as a cyanide antidote. So, in my opinion, he needs to be hospitalized with intravenous fluids and injections of Cerenia (anti-emetic) and more supportive care to give him the best chance at recovery. Hope this helps.
