Is my 14-year-old dog with cancer in pain? She's not eating or active.

I'm so sorry Blue has cancer! Signs of pain in dogs include a reluctant to move, decrease in appetite, lethargy, and whining. Should you see any of those signs, I would give her the pain medication as directed by your vet.

Sassy is such a cutie, and I'm sorry she is sick! If she is having some trouble walking, I would be concerned she may be painful and I would speak to your vet about possibly putting her on some pain medication. Otherwise, it sounds like from your description she is doing ok so far. In terms of symptoms you would see when she deteriorates, you would notice a decrease in appetite and/or a complete lack of appetite, decrease in energy and an increased desire to lay around more, and possibly difficulty controlling her bowels. Those are signs that cancer is making her sicker, and if you see any of those signs, have her seen by a vet as soon as possible to see if there are any additional treatments that may help her. I'm so sorry that Brownie has cancer! Depending on where her lump is, it can cause pain as she places pressure on it. If there is any bleeding or discharge from her lump, that can be painful as well. You can discuss your concerns with your vet, who can prescribe pain medication for Brownie to make her more comfortable. I hope this helps!

Poor Sadie! The lethargy is a sign of not feeling well and pain, and losing her appetite will be another sign. I would take her into another vet for a second opinion to see if surgery is an option for you. Best of luck.

It sounds like Lucy is in pain, poor girl! Yelping, lack of appetite, and decreased movement are all signs of pain in dogs. It's very possible she sprained or strained something, like her back or a limb, and this is her way of telling you. I'm glad the Cosequin seemed to help her, but in general, Cosequin is not a pain reliever; it's a joint supplement that provides nutritive support to cartilage, joint capsules, and joint fluid, and it's an excellent product, so I do recommend you keep Lucy on this consistently. However, I think she needs some more aggressive pain management and a check-up with your vet to make sure she hasn't seriously injured herself. Especially if her back is painful, as that can sometimes involve pinched nerves. If she has a history of bladder stones and is having inappropriate urination, that definitely needs to be evaluated as well. When you go in to have her pain assessed, bring a urine sample with you for your vet to check. It may be something as simple as a urinary tract infection or it could be a recurrence of bladder stones, but it's worth getting checked out. Good luck and I hope Lucy feels better soon!

Unfortunately there is nothing you can give her for pain. Many human ones are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. I would consider her symptoms a medical emergency, you need to take her into a vet now.

Typically I assume that cancer is painful and will always offer pain medications. Otherwise, I have owners watch for decreased appetite, hiding and crying as these can all be signs of discomfort.
