My English Bulldog has a burst back cyst. How can I treat it at home?

My English Bulldog spirit 9 years old. He has a cyst was his back. Last check with no vet was last year. He wasn't concerned but it has burst. How can I treat it

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Without a picture it is difficult for me to advise you on the most appropriate way to handle this. However, if it has ruptured and it is a small opening, you can keep it clean twice daily using a mixture of water and betadine so that you have a light brown solution. Use this to clean the cyst until it heals. If it becomes infected or does not resolve, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine this so that the most appropriate treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! My dog's cyst burst. What's the best way to clean and treat it safely?

The best way to clean a mass that ruptures is with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water or with Chlorhexidine solution 3% diluted. Then oral antibiotics form your local vet may be needed as well to get it to heal properly. I would then consider having this mass removed. Best of luck moving forward with your pet Chloe.

My senior dog's fatty neck cyst opened. Can it heal without surgery?

Potentially it could heal, but keep in mind that the cyst will likely grow back because the cyst sac has not been removed. So this could be a continuing problem when it heals, fills up again, and then opens. While the best thing to do is have it removed, you can hold off to see if it fills up again. Clean the area with warm water and antiseptic soap. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and she will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. What i am seeing in the pictures is likely a sebaceous cyst that ruptured. These are common with older dogs and are benign. When these rupture there is a chance they will become infected so the best treatment is to have it removed to prevent this from happening. My dog's ruptured sebaceous cyst: Is my home treatment enough?

The problems with cysts is that they open reoccur, and typically need to be removed surgically. In addition, removing the fluid from a cyst should be done in a sterile manner, and I would be concerned that you may accidentally be introducing infection into the cyst yourself by pressing on it. I would take Akkiko into the vet first thing in the morning. The vet can drain any remaining fluid with a sterile needle and syringe, and can discuss removing it with you. There is also the chance it could be a malignant adenocarcinoma, so it is a good idea to have the vet biopsy it just to make sure it is benign.

My 5-month-old bulldog has a red sore on his underbelly. What is it?

Make sure that this is not from urine getting into that part of the skin and if it is, have him evaluated by a veterinarian. You can try to use a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine twice weekly for 2 weeks. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good day!

Why won't my pitbull's fluid-filled cysts go away with meds?

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign.
