My dog burned his paw with hot water, what's the best first aid?

Hi there and thank you for your post! I'm sorry to hear that rock stepped on hot coals. A triple antibiotic ointment can be applied to the affected areas. If you have first-aid bandage material, I would place a telfa pad over the affected area and lightly wrap with the bandage material up above the wrist area. I would wrap the telfa pad with a cotton roll first, then use gauze wrap around the cotton, and then elastikon bandage over that. You must take care not to wrap very tight otherwise you could cut off the circulation to the foot and cause serious swelling and damage. This is only meant to be short-term until you can get to a vet. I would not wait longer than 24 hours to get him somewhere. This could be a burn but it is hard for me to say without seeing it in person myself. That being said, the absolute best thing to put on this is Silver Sulfadiazine cream (also called SSD cream). This is burn cream they use on humans. You should be able to buy this at any pharmacy - ask the pharmacist. Apply it 2-3 times per day until healed. DO NOT use hydrogen peroxide on this - that will delay healing. If you want to clean it just use a mild soap and warm water. If he is sick or starts to act sick (not eating, lethargic, vomiting, etc) then get him to your vet right away. Burns can cause septicemia (blood infection) which is life threatening. If he is not sick you can proceed as above and hopefully this will heal up nicely. If the burns damaged the hair follicles then his hair may not grow back. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Do Not put peroxude, it will make it worse. silver sulfadiazine cream is the best option, if you can bandage it, it would be best. if you can't find this cream you can use neosporin instead but it is less effective for burns.

Ouch! Running cold water on it was smart. Ideally, he should be seen by your vet since the burn looks like it goes through the pad. This could lead to infection. If this is not possible now, keep the area clean and dry. Use an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent licking. A dab of aloe vera gel can be applied a few times daily. Keep the e-collar on so he doesn't ingest the aloe vera. You may want to use shredded paper towels in the litterbox until the paw heals. Monitor for lameness, lethargy, swelling, discharge or odor. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.

If you cannot get her seen until No day, I would go buy a set of dog booties to keep her feet covered until Monday and if she starts chewing at the paw pads, you should buy a plastic cone to go around her head so she does not make it worse. You can try soaking the paws in some cool water to help relieve any discomfort she may have. On Monday, your vet may want to put her on anti-inflammatories and an antibiotic. This is a bad burn, but doesn't look too bad and should heal well with treatment over the next couple of weeks. The best thing you can do is flush the wound using a syringe or other dispensing device with cool water for five minutes. This may not be easy, because cats tend to hate water on their paws. I recommend having someone help you with this and wrapping Zorro in a towel to make sure the wound gets flushed well. Silver sulfadizine is the best for burns and you may be able to get this at the pharmacy. In order to keep the wound clean, it's best to flush the wound 1-2 times a day and gently wipe away any big crusts - make sure not to scrub the wound, because this can make it worse. Apply the antibacterial cream after each flushing. After that, it's best to bandage the paw, or he may lick the cream, which can be bad for him. Bandaging will also help the wound heal faster. There are some helpful videos on YouTube to help you do this well. You can help keep the bandage on by placing a good (really sticky) tape above and below the bandage. I would definitely recommend taking Daisy to the vet. She may need topical medication, very likely needs pain medication and possibly antibiotics as well. Burns on the feet can take a long time to heal but proper care from the start will help them heal faster. I hope Daisy feels better soon.
