My puppy has bumps near private parts. Ant bites or infection?

Poor Odyssi! The red pimple-like lesions that you are seeing could be related to a skin infection or contact reaction to insect bites (mosquitoes, fleas, etc.). A trip to the vet is in order to further assess these lesions, as antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medications are likely needed. At this point, make sure that she is receiving a high quality flea and tick preventative (such as Nexgard, Bravecto or Advantix) regularly. You can also bathe her in a gentle oatmeal-based shampoo (unless you are using topical flea control). If Odyssi seems overly itchy, put an e-collar (cone) on her until her vet appointment. Insect bites can be common in dogs. I worry most about a red and swollen bump showing up suddenly because it could be a hive which is a sign of an allergic reaction or response to something. This tends to cause swelling of the skin around the face and feet and is a sure sign of an allergic reaction. Since Q is still a puppy, we also can commonly see a skin infection, called pyoderma, that tends to arise quickly. If Q is experiencing itchy skin, hair loss or develops more red and swollen bumps, I recommend having him examined by your veterinarian today.

Use this on the affected area 2-3 times daily until the bumps are gone. If there is no improvement in the rash in the next 3-5 days, or if she is itchy or painful or having any other symptoms, then I would recommend having her examined by a vet as she may need oral antibiotics or other prescription medication to treat the problem.

Those bumps could be a few things such as blocked pores, an infection or related to her anal glands. These lesions generally resolve on their own without treatment but you should monitor the area closely. Also make sure she does not traumatize the area. If the lesions are not improving after 2 weeks or if they get worse at any point, have the lesions examined by the veterinarian. While insect bites are possible, another common cause of lesions as we see here is a secondary bacterial infection of the skin resulting in papules, crusts, and pustules which can be very itchy. Oftentimes these dogs need a course of antibiotics and either a steroid or a drug called apoquel to get the inflammation/itch under control. Sometimes the itching may be controlled with an antihistamine such as diphenhydramine, hydroxyzine, or cetirizine under the direction of your veterinarian, but oftentimes initially a steroid or stronger medication is required.

Those blackish areas are likely related to irritation and a secondary infection. This irritation could be any bites but fleas or environmental allergy are more common. If you are noticing multiple areas affected or if Kasper is getting worse, a trip to the veterinarian is indicated for medications. Small areas or areas that are very minor may respond to feeding a high quality food aimed at skin health such as Royal Canin or Nutro. Omega 3 fatty acids for dogs can also help improve skin health. You can wash the areas with a medicated dog shampoo and treat for fleas. I recommend Simparica or Nexgard for flea treatment.
