My dog has black, flaky, itchy bumps. Are they ant bites or worse?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

My dog has started developed little blackish colored bumps the past week; they seem like the color is from dried blood, as it's flakey. The newest one is on his tail. We let him out on our screened in patio and Im wondering if these are just ant bites since Ive seen ant hills out there and they seem to itch him, or if I should be more worried. Also, how can I help him? He's about 10yrs old and has had a few fatty non-cancerous bumps for about 3yrs now, if that matters.

Those blackish areas are likely related to irritation and a secondary infection. This irritation could be any bites but fleas or environmental allergy are more common. If you are noticing multiple areas affected or if Kasper is getting worse, a trip to the veterinarian is indicated for medications. Small areas or areas that are very minor may respond to feeding a high quality food aimed at skin health such as Royal Canin or Nutro. Omega 3 fatty acids for dogs can also help improve skin health. You can wash the areas with a medicated dog shampoo and treat for fleas. I recommend Simparica or Nexgard for flea treatment.

Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). The following products can be found online and can be tried as a first line approach: Douxo PS Calm shampoo, Essential 6 spot on by dermoscent, Krillex Krill oil chews.

Those spots on Mara could be several things including fleas, allergies,superficial bacterial infection or endocrine disease. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. I do recommend to go ahead and treat for fleas just in case. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing her diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesions once a day (not her whole body, just the lesions). Also protect the area from trauma by having your pup wear an elizabethan collar at all times. It is possible, though it looks more like it could be a bacterial infection. Ideally, take her in to the vet for an exam so that the proper treatment can be determined. What causes itchy lumps with black specs on my dog's skin and tail?

It sounds as if your dog has a skin infection, most commonly caused by an allergy, a skin mite (Demodex) or fleas.   The allergy could be a due to a protein in your dog’s food or an environmental allergy like to dust, pollens, grasses, etc.   The allergy causes your dog to itch and chew at the skin which breaks down the skin barrier. This then leads to infection. Skin infections are typically characterized by large areas of redness, crusting, flaking, and pustules. A thorough skin examination by your veterinarian should be able to determine the cause of the itch so it can be treated appropriately. Your dog will most likely need antibiotics to help clear up the infection and possibly an allergy/anti-itch medication like Apoquel, Atopica, or Cytopoint to give some relief while the infection clears up. My dog has red bumps on his back. What's causing this skin issue?

Chronic skin problems could be several things including allergies to fleas, allergies to something in the environment, food allergy or endocrine disease. Each one of these problems is detected and addressed differently and I recommend to discuss with your veterinarian which one to start hunting down first. Parasites are often ruled out with an oral medication like Simparica. Food allergy is best ruled out with a diet trial using a hydrolyzed protein. Endocrine diseases are detected with blood work. Environmental allergies are a little more difficult to detect but a response to therapy or a blood test can give an indication. Once you figure out and address the underlying cause, the lesions should not come back. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. My dog bit his skin, now it's black. Is it flea allergy dermatitis?

Yes, it could be due to a flea allergy. The black you are seeing is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. I would not be overly worried about that. The lesion looks very quiet now. I would continue with the Seresto collar and if you notice this recurring or happening in another location I would have him seen by your vet for an exam.

My dog has skin bumps like bug bites but isn't itching. What's wrong?

Dingo's skin lesions look most suspicious for a bacterial skin infection. These infections often develop as a result of itching or licking from underlying allergies to fleas, food or the environment. Even though you haven't noticed Dingo itching herself, some dogs will hide from their owners and only scratch when they are alone. (I realize this sounds crazy - but it is quite common!) Make sure that Dingo is receiving a high quality flea and tick preventative (such as Nexgard, Bravecto or K9 Advantix II) regularly. She will need to go to her vet because these lesions typically require oral antibiotics for resolution. I hope that all goes well!

Those spots on Basil could be several things including allergies, skin parasites, endocrine disease or a bacterial infection. He looks very irritated and I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian for appropriate testing and treatment. That bump could be related to the underlying cause of the skin issues but an ingrown hair or even skin tumor is possible (time will tell). At home, you can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health.
