My sick puppy has bumps near his penis. Are they related to his illness?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely a small focus of infection or pustule. Sometimes these do occur in puppies and go away on their own. Sometimes it does require antibiotics to take care of it. You can bathe him with a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine which you may get at your local pet store. You can bathe him twice weekly for 2 weeks. If it does not improve, have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck!

I get concerned with things a lot sooner with such a young puppy. The watery blood would make me recommend an exam by itself. I would want a urine sample to see if there is blood in the urine. The pustules have me concerned about a bacterial infection. I would recommend taking him in for an evaluation by a veterinarian. He might need to be on antibiotics or at least a topical medication. Hello, this looks like a very mild staph infection, very common in very young puppies. You can bathe your puppy with a mild antibacterial soap or shampoo, one with benzoyl peroxide or chlorhexidine. Allow the soap to remain in contact with the skin for 5-10 minutes before rinsing. Repeat this 1-2x a week & the skin should look better soon. Poor puppy. Kai has what appears to be a contact dermatitis or puppy pyoderma. This is usually caused by something coming in contact with the skin, such as urine, or is simply due to your pet still developing its immune system and being vulnerable to infections. This is usually easily treated with a short course of antibiotics prescribed by your vet. I would recommend scheduling an appt with your vet for Kai to get this resolved. Until you can get Kai seen, you can gently cleanse the skin with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water. I hope that Kai's skin infection clears up well soon! Best wishes and take care. : )

It looks like you've done a lot to help this little guy. I'm sure the vet would have told you this, but make sure you are stimulating him to poop after each feeding by wiping his bum with a warm, moist, tissue or soft cloth. Puppies commonly get this on their bellies and they usually go away with good cleaning. I recommend cleaning the belly with a medicated wipe or shampoo (can get this at the pet store) once a day until the bump(s) are gone. If it seems to get worse, then you'll want to take him into the vet for an exam. Although it is not uncommon, in Serius's case it looks infected, you will need to take him to the vet in order to get it checked and he will probably need an antibiotic course. because of his age i suspect it might be related to the skin contact with urine.

Skin lesions like these can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, or a combination of the above. Sometimes puppies like Palmer can get a type of “puppy acne” along the belly as well. If the lesions do not start to go away in the next week, or if they start getting worse, I recommend making an appointment to have Palmer seen by your veterinarian to help determine the cause of the bumps you’ve noticed and to make sure they are treated appropriately. The vet will likely want to look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine if there is an infection and to figure out what medication is appropriate for treatment.
