My chihuahua mix has a new bump or sore under his chin. What now?

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Niño's lesion, given his age, is most likely from a red button tumor, an arthropod (insect or arachnid) bite/sting, or a dermal foreign body. An exam will help narrow this down further and give a better idea of what to expect. If it is a red button tumor, it will take around 2 weeks and go away on its own, though it will ooze blood periodically in the meantime. Because he has other possibilities, I would recommend an exam by your veterinarian and possibly a fine needle aspirate to try to get a more narrow diagnosis for more pointed treatment. I can see the bumps on his chin - these may be caused by a skin infection, which can be very uncomfortable and itchy. I recommend having Charlie seen by a vet as soon as possible as Charlie may need antibiotics. In the meantime, you should try to keep the area clean and consider getting Charlie an E-collar or "cone" to keep him from scratching the area.

You can try to use chlorhexidine containing pads (such as the Douxo chlorhexidine 3% PS pads) to clean the are twice daily for 7 days. You may find these online or at your local pet store. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!

I would recommend having him evaluated by his regular veterinarian; a swelling under the chin can be due to a variety of things, including an infection, an insect bite, a trauma, or the development of a growth, among others. I would recommend having his ears and the bump evaluated, and any further treatment he may need worked out from there. Good luck!
