What are these brown spots on my dog's belly and how to treat them?

This is likely a condition known as impetigo; which is a bacterial infection of the skin. This is common in puppies and is often self-limiting (will go away on its own). You can help this along by washing the belly daily with a medicated shampoo (can find this at the pet store). Lightly scrub the area with a wash cloth for five minutes each time and repeat the bath daily until the belly appears normal again. If the belly starts to look worse, or is not clearing up after two weeks, then it's best to take Rocco to your vet for an evaluation and further treatment. This looks like a mild bacterial skin infection. Dogs can get this from laying on damp ground. Often it will go away on its own. You can bathe the area with antibacterial shampoo once or twice weekly to help it heal more quickly. Since she’s not bothered by it I’m not overly concerned. Those spots on Ben's could be several things including allergies, skin mites, flea bites, ringworm (which humans can get) or a bacterial infection. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can also check or treat for fleas. You can wash the lesions with soap once a day and rinse well (don't wash his whole body, just those spots). Protect the areas from licking or scratching and he may need to wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. If the lesions don't start looking better within about a week or if they get worse, have him examined by the veterinarian who may prescribe medications. Hi again, and thanks for your question. This could be a superficial bacterial infection, which may require something a bit stronger than topical antiseptic wipes. Your vet may recommend oral antibiotic therapy for a few weeks, and I would definitely advocate weekly (or twice weekly) bathing with a chlorhexidine-based shampoo. Leave the shampoo on for 10 minutes and then rinse with lukewarm water. Does Rosco use a harness that may be irritating the stomach and elbows? Another possibility is an underlying allergy that is causing a secondary bacterial infection on the skin. If the skin is itchy, your vet may also recommend anti-inflammatory medications to help relieve the discomfort and help the skin to heal faster. Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). You can try to use a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine twice weekly for 2 weeks. Judging from the picture you provided, I suspect that Baby may be dealing with a bacterial skin infection.
