What are these red spots on my puppy's belly and how do I treat them?

They are likely minor superficial bacterial infections that are common in the groin and armpits. These generally do not require treatment however if they become bothersome or are multiplying then Roxie should see the vet. Many times they will come and go. Some breeds are more prone to this condition. Allergies can also predispose to these lesions. You can purchase medicated shampoos that can help to keep the pores a little more clean and exfoliate the skin. This will generally help to decrease the amount of lesions on Roxie's belly. This is called puppy pyoderma. It’s a mild skin infection that puppies often get. You can bathe the area with anti bacterial shampoo every few days and that should clear it up. If it is getting worse or the puppies seem sick then bring them in for a exam and treatment. They may need oral antibiotics. Also make sure the bedding is soft and dry. I suspect that these are little bumps are due to a bacterial infection (pyoderma). Puppies commonly get this on their bellies and they usually go away with good cleaning. I recommend cleaning the belly with a medicated wipe or shampoo (can get this at the pet store) once a day until the bump(s) are gone. If it seems to get worse, then you'll want to take Mia into the vet for an exam. Another possible problem is that Bella may actually have some blackheads/irritated skin on her belly. With either of these conditions if the spots are mild and Bella is not bothered by them you could try gently cleaning them with a gentle cleanser decided for us in dogs. If Bella is scratching/rubbing at the spots or there is a colored/odorous discharge I would recommend having Bella seen by your veterinarian so that they can further examine the spots and determine the need for another treatments. It looks like there may be a small skin infection (called pyoderma). You can use a medicated shampoo like Dechra Malacetic Ultra Otic, but if it doesn't look better in 72 hours, your pup may need oral antibiotics to clear the infection.

Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics).
