My dog has a brown scab on her neck with white stuff. What is it?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | 10 years and 10 months old | 60 lbs

My dog had what looked like a brown scab sticking out of her skin on the scruff of her neck. I squeezed it and a trail of thick white stuff came out. Now there is a small home in her skin but it looks like there is more thick white stuff still in it.

This sounds like a sebaceous cyst. They are common in certain breeds of dogs. The waxy sebaceous material builds up and the cyst will become smaller once you squeeze out the material. As long as it doesn’t look infected I would clean it with hydrogen peroxide and leave it alone. Occasionally they become infected or are in an area where they get irritated then I recommend surgical removal. They are usually nothing to be overly concerned about.
