Why is there brown in my dog's mouth? What should I do to treat it?

Missy appears to have several areas of bone loss and exposed tooth roots. I suspect she has several diseased teeth and significant infection. Sometimes severe bone loss can results in deep ulcers and even fistulas. I recommend to discuss having Missy sedated to remove the diseased teeth and clean out any ulcers. Then give her mouth time to heal. It’s unlikely that this problem and the odor will go away with out the full treatment. Ulcer and bad teeth can cause discomfort. If Brownie has bad teeth, then she might drool more on that side causing more saliva staining. I recommend you have her seen by your vet to check if there is a wound present under the fur, or if she has dental disease that requires fixing. Best of luck with Brownie!

You can gently clean the area with a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution once or twice daily. Dry thoroughly afterwards. Place an e-collar (cone) on Milly to prevent scratching or rubbing. If the spot doesn't begin to resolve in a few days. Have her physically examined by your veterinarian. She may need systemic antibiotics. A biopsy may also be recommended to rule out malignancy or autoimmune disorders.

From the photo, Puddin’s mouth does look red and I am suspicious of an infection or an allergic reaction. I recommend to protect the area from any trauma by having her wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. I also recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian to get this cleared up. This may be an localized infection caused by the constant contact with the lower canine tip but a clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm this clinical suspicion and treat appropriately. This presentation could be due to a localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching (if any). Wipe away any food or drool. If it is not looking better within a few more days, she will need to see her veterinarian. She may need to medication to help the skin heal.
