Dog broke toe, splint caused sores. Can an open splint prevent them?

Hello, sorry to hear about Panda. An injury such as a sprain may simply require some rest and ice. If he has a cut then cleaning with soap and water will work. And finally, placing an e-collar on him so that he does not lick at his toes would be best case scenario as this is likely the source of infection. If he is licking at the area, he should wear a cone for approximately 3-5 days. No running, jumping, or rough housing should be allowed during his rest period of 10 days. Once he has recovered, then he may resume his normal activity. If his toe continues to be red, then you he should be seen by a veterinarian. To keep him from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on him. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps!

A bandage or sock should be changed whenever it becomes soiled. An e-collar (cone) can be used to prevent licking or chewing.

Ouch! Poor Tyus! That looks pretty infected to me. I'd definitely suggest Tyus wear an e-collar to prevent licking. You can also try to use a 2-3 tablespoons of Epsom salts diluted in a half gallon of water to soak his feet. However, I strongly suggest taking Tyus to see a veterinarian as he likely needs prescription medications like antibiotics. Since the area is likely itchy and painful he may need prescription pain medications or corticosteroids to fully resolve the issue. Not every torn toenail will bleed, but you did a great job caring for it at home. Keeping it clean is very important but you can only use peroxide once. From now on, you can use a mild soap to clean it if needed. Only continue to cover the area for 24 hours total. Any longer could delay healing and sometimes bandages can injure healthy tissue. I do recommend taking Sloane to a vet for pain medications. There is nothing safe over the counter that you can give pets for pain. This is not a weight bearing toe so she may not be in pain but anytime she catches the nail on something it’s going to cause some discomfort. They may also prescribe antibiotics however, keeping it clean and keeping Sloane from licking it will do the trick. The nail will grow back on its own, it will just take some time. Unfortunately Tysonlee needs to see a veterinarian. This wound needs to be debrided and cleaned up and then properly closed. It has been too long to just glue the wound or close it without proper care before hand. The nail seems attached but the nail bed is infected. The pink tissue seems inflamed but I would not jump to surgery yet. You can keep the area clean with soap and water and apply neosporin. the most important part is to stop him from licking it by getting an e collar or putting a baby sock over it. He does need to see a vet for antibiotics to see if it can heal as an open wound with that. IF that is not successful then they will go towards the surgery route
