My dog's toe is swollen and red. What home care can I give him?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | neutered | 5 months and 21 days old | 40 lbs

My pup hurt his foot a few days ago but now his one back toe seems swollen and red/bruised. He's on anti inflammatory meds because he was neutered Friday. Is there anything more we can do other than try to keep him off of it? He puts some weight on it but not full

Poor Walter! You are right that you should try to keep him off of it as much as possible, and I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a lead only, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it.
