Why isn't my dog's broken nail healing? Leg swollen, black spots.

I would be somewhat concerned about this. It is hard to tell from the photos but it looks like the toe is still swollen? If that is the case, this could be just more than a broken nail - some tumors arise from the nail bed. I suggest you have her back to your vet for a follow-up exam.

Hello, sorry to hear about King. The nail looks like it may have broken at the base and may now be infected. The rest of the nail has likely lost its blood supply and therefore its changing colors. He will likely need to have this toe-nail removed under sedation and his local infection treated. Typically, nails grow back in a few weeks and the infection clears up in a couple of days with treatment. He may also require a light bandage to keep the site protected while it heals. Poor guy. His toenail has been injured, exposing the nail nerve. This entire paw should be soaked in Chlorhexidine solution 3% diluted with water until light blue mixture for 5-10 minutes once a day. Then you should get him on oral antibiotics and pain medication prescribed by your veterinarian. Please do not give him over the counter people pain medicine as these can be quite toxic to pets liver and kidneys. The nail may also need to be bandaged for a few days, until it heals a bit more, especially if he is limping on it. : ( The bloody urine should be seen immediately by your vet as well. This can indicate urinary stones, a UTI or even bladder cancer if your pet is older. It is very difficult to tell from these photos, it is possible that your dog's toe nail became slightly torn/detached from the underlying nail bed and you are seeing the separation here. We can, however, occasionally see nail bed tumors. I would recommend a visit with your vet to better examine the area. If it is a loose toenail they may need to trim it back to make it more comfortable until it grows back in normally. This can be very tough to do at home because often these guys are painful so trimming the nail back can be really difficult without skilled help!

That looks like a nail bed infection (either bacterial or fungal or both). Was the medication given an oral skin antibiotic? Diesel may also benefit from a topical ointment with similar ingredients to otomax for ear infections, a medicated shampoo/mousse to use daily and an e-collar to prevent licking.
