Should I breed two mixed-breed dogs or purebreds for healthier pups?

I'm very sorry you recently lost your Golden! Please accept my condolences for your loss. Actually mix breed dogs can be healthier than purebred dogs. Purebred dogs can be prone to serious health diseases due to the breeding. For example, Goldens are prone to cancer. A mix breed will have a mix of genes, and may not be as likely to suffer from heritable diseases. I hope this helps!

Honestly a mixed breed dog will be healthiest. Purebred dogs will be susceptible to genetic diseases, and due to this, some breeds like Pugs have big health problems like allergies, brachycephalic disease, and eye problems. Because mix breeds have a mixture of genetics, the risk of disease are lower. I would personally choose a mix breed small dog. I hope this helps!

If another dog mated with Akira as well, there is certainly a chance that some or all of the puppies may be fathered by that dog rather than your male. There is no way to predict how many puppies (if any) will be mixed vs. how many will be purebred, since it's a matter of random chance when more than one male has mated with her. So I'm afraid you won't know until the puppies are born.

Brucellosis is the most commonly transmitted infectious disease between dogs in most areas but there is also a type of transmissible cancer that can be exchanged through breeding. You give your location as Canada, and I would say that TVT (Transmissible Venereal Tumor) is relatively rare there, but it is quite common in other parts of the world. If your dog is a male, there are likely few other risks to breeding. Most of the serious risks manifest during pregnancy and especially delivery, when the possibility of dystocia, or inability to give birth (a number of causes) may occur. In these cases the life of the female can be in serious danger without surgical intervention (C-section). Finally, in general, I'd ask that you really consider whether you feel that your dog and the proposed partner would produce puppies of sound genetics.Typically the only way to be confident in this is a full veterinary evaluation to include testing for known genetic problems in the breed. I'd also say that there are many unwanted dogs and puppies in the world, and breeding is not something to be lightly considered. .

Since the litter would receive half of its genes from the pit bull and half from your mixed breed, none of the puppies would be pit bulls. That said, the way genes are expressed can vary widely and it is possible that some of the puppies may strongly resemble pit bulls. It is equally possible that none of the puppies would resemble pit bulls. Genetics keep us on our toes and you never know exactly what will happen!

This can certainly be a hot button topic for many dog lovers! :) Personally, I know quite a few lovely goldendoodles and don't have any particular ethical problems with buying one as long as the breeder is doing his/her due diligence - screening the parents for health problems like hip and elbow dysplasia, hereditary eye problems, heart issues, etc. Just like getting a purebred puppy, make sure to do your homework and only buy from a responsible breeder with healthy, good-natured dogs. As long as you do that, I don't see any problem with it at all.

There are probably close enough in size to not have any issues, but it is difficult to say with any certainty. Being mixed breeds, it is possible there may be some possibility that the pups could be larger than the mother. If you choose to proceed, after vet checks of both dogs, have the mother x-rayed about a week before her due date.
